Nittany Lions Pounce on Chargers

The Lancaster Bible College softball team played one of its better games of the season in game one of a doubleheader against Penn St. Abington on Wednesday, but like has been the case for much of the season, one bad inning led to a loss and the Chargers were never in game two and were swept by the Nittany Lions in Abington, Pa. The losses mark the second straight doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Nittany Lions and Lancaster Bible is now 6-22 this season and 2-10 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Nittany Lions are 15-11 overall and 9-3 in conference play.

Penn St. Abington 3, Lancaster Bible 2 -- Game 1
How it Happened:
Lancaster Bible got on the board in the first inning as sophomore Samantha Denson singled home senior Julia D'Arrigo who had singled earlier in the inning. D'Arrigo was clutch in the circle as well as she pitched a gem and held the Nittany Lions at bay through five innings.

Lancaster Bible doubled its lead in the top of the fifth as Denson singled home D'Arrigo again to make it 2-0 in favor of the Chargers. After Penn St. Abington cut its deficit to one, 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth, the Chargers put runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, but couldn't add an insurance run.

Leaving runners on base in the top half of the seventh came back to haunt the Chargers in the bottom half of the inning as the Nittany Lions loaded the bases and then tied the game on a wild pitch. The Nittany Lions' Gina Cuozzo singled home the winning run a few pitches later, sending the Chargers to their seventh straight loss.

Inside the Box Score: Lancaster Bible had nine hits, as D'Arrigo went 2-for-4 with two runs scored...Zoie Senn was also 2-for-4, as was Denson who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI...Morgan Burkholder also had two hits, going 2-for-3...D'Arrigo struck out two and scattered 12 hits.

Penn St. Abington 14, Lancaster Bible 0 (5 innings) -- Game 2
How it Happened:
Unlike game one, it was the Nittany Lions who scored first as they plated four runs in the first inning. Penn St. Abington scored five more runs over the next two innings and then put the game away in the fourth inning with five more runs.

Inside the Box Score: Lancaster Bible had five more hits in game two, as Denson led the way, going 2-for-3...Burkholder was 1-for-3 and senior Kelsey Collins, playing in her first games in almost three weeks, was 1-for-2...Kayla Thoune also added a hit as she was 1-for-2.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 5-11 all-time against Penn St. Abington and finishes 0-4 against the Nittany Lions this season...Denson has at least one hit in six of her last seven games and in 9 of her last 11.
