The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team battled all of Sunday afternoon and came away victorious, as the Chargers defeated Keuka, 62-58 at Horst Athletic Center for their third straight win. Senior Kirsten Webster scored her 1,000th point late in the third quarter, as the Chargers improved to 9-7 overall and 7-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The loss dropped the Wolves to 10-3 this season and 5-2 in conference play.
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible jumped out to an early 8-0 lead just 2:44 into the contest, as Webster scored four of the team's first eight points. A layup from sophomore Caitlin Hickey five minutes later gave Lancaster Bible a 15-6 lead, and the Chargers took a 15-8 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
Keuka cut its deficit to just one, 17-16 after opening the second quarter with an 8-2 run, but a 3-pointer from Hickey, one of four on the day, followed by a layup from Webster, restored the Chargers' six-point lead at 22-16 with 6:37 remaining in the half. The Wolves battled and made it a three-point game, 23-20 with 4:27 remaining, but Lancaster Bible used a 8-2 run the rest of the quarter to earn a 31-22 halftime advantage. Four different Lancaster Bible players scored during the scoring run, which was capped by a layup from freshman Lizzy Tilton with 43 seconds to play.
A high-scoring third quarter saw the teams go back and forth for much of the 10 minutes, as Keuka closed the gap to two midway through the quarter, but again, Lancaster Bible hung tough and took a 12-point lead, 46-34 on another 3-pointer from Hickey with 2:08 to play. With 51 seconds to play in the third quarter, Webster was fouled and sank both free throws to give her 1,000 points for her career, as she became the 11th player in program history to hit the 1,000-point mark.
The Chargers led by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but a 6-0 Keuka run over the first 2:57 of the frame, cut the Chargers' lead to five, 50-45. Lancaster Bible appeared on track for a win, after a layup from junior Courtney Goyak gave the Chargers a 57-48 lead with 4:15 to play, but Keuka went on a 7-0 run over the next 2:05, and Sam Laranjo's layup with 2:10 left cut the Chargers' lead to 57-55.
Goyak, limited by foul trouble for much of the game, grabbed a big offensive rebound with under two minutes to play and her put back layup gave Lancaster Bible a 59-55 lead. After a free throw from Webster gave Lancaster Bible a 60-55 lead, Reighly Melochick knocked down a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to play to give the Wolves life. Hickey was then fouled with five seconds to play and she put the game away, calmly sinking both free throws.
