Trio of Victories Helps Chargers to Impressive Weekend

The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team had one of the best weekend's in program history over the past two days, as the Chargers won three matches at the Jim Coleman Invitational in Springfield, Ohio. The Chargers went 3-0 and were the only team to not lose match of the eight teams at the tournament hosted by Wittenberg University. The Chargers won twice on Friday, defeating Cincinnati Christian (3-0) and Lakeland (3-1), before earning a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Southern Virginia on Saturday. 

Junior Nate Miller continued his impressive start to 2018, as he was named to the All-Tournament Team after posting 75 kills over three matches. Below is a quick recap of each match.

Lancaster Bible 3, Cincinnati Christian 0
25-19, 25-19, 25-16


Highlights:
-Lancaster Bible pulled away in the midway part of each of the three sets, as the Chargers had little trouble with Cincinnati Christian
-Leading by four in the final set, 19-15, Lancaster Bible won six of the final seven points to clinch the match

By the Numbers: The Chargers had 31 kills, while Cincinnati Christian had 32...Lancaster Bible led in digs, 38-30, and also posted a .250 team hitting percentage...Miller led the way with 11 kills, while senior Kasey Gentry chipped in with eight...Miller also added four blocks, while fellow junior Daniel Kreider had three...Senior Derek Bigley had two of the team's eight aces, and sophomore Kole Horst had six kills and no errors on 12 attempts. 

Information Hodge Podge: This was the first-ever matchup between the two teams...The eight team service aces are a season-high.


Lancaster Bible 3, Lakeland 1
25-15, 27-29, 27-25, 25-13


Highlights:
-Lancaster Bible won easily in the first set, stringing together two separate runs of five points or more
-The second set went back-and-forth, and the Chargers fought off five set points, before finally falling to Lakeland, 29-27
-Despite the second set loss, the Chargers came out strong in the third set and won seven of eight points midway through the set to take a 16-8 lead...Lakeland responded with seven of eight points of its own later in the set, and the Chargers fought off two set points again, as they trailed 24-22, before rattling off five of the last six points to grab the 27-25 win
-Lancaster Bible used the momentum from the third set victory, and built an early 9-4 lead in the fourth set, before winning, 25-13

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible had 58 kills, while Lakeland had 41...The Chargers also had a 58-42 edge in digs...Miller had a program-record 28 kills in the victory, and also added three aces...Gentry had 11 kills and a match-high 16 digs...Horst added nine kills and 13 digs, while Kreider had five kills and two blocks...Sophomore Colin McCabe added 13 digs, while senior Sky Woelkers had three kills, four blocks and four digs.

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 1-1 all-time against Lakeland...The Muskies defeated the Chargers, 3-0 early in the 2014 season in a match played at Penn St. Behrend in Erie, Pa...Sophomore Kaleb Ansell had 51 assists in the win, the most in a single match in his career.


Lancaster Bible 3, Southern Virginia 2
19-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-27, 15-13


Highlights:
-Lancaster Bible trailed, 10-4 early in the set and then 16-8 midway through, eventually losing 25-19 in the opening set
-The big-hitting teams went back-and-forth in the second set, and the Chargers fought off two set points, before taking the final three points and the set, 27-25...Kills by Miller and Bigley, followed by a Knights' error, gave the set to the Chargers
-Lancaster Bible maintained a small lead for much of the third set, and Gentry finally put it away, 25-21, with a big kill
-Looking to close out the match, the Chargers took an early 7-0 lead in the fourth set, but the Knights battled back, and won six of the last seven points of the set, to win, 27-25
-Trailing, 3-1 in the fifth and final set, the Chargers won five straight points to grab a 6-3 lead...Southern Virginia eventually tied the match, 9-9 on an error by Lancaster Bible, but the Chargers won the next three points for a 12-9 advantage...The Knights closed the gap to one, 13-12 and 14-13, but Miller's 35th kill of the match sealed the victory for the Chargers.

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible had a season-high 64 kills, while the Knights had 63...The Chargers also held a 76-70 edge in digs...Miller's program-record of 28 kills lasted all of 18 hours, as he blasted 35 kills, and added 13 digs...Gentry had 11 more kills, and added 12 digs...McCabe had 30 digs, becoming just the third player in program history to post 30 or more digs in a single match...Horst chipped in with five kills and 10 digs, while Kreider added seven kills and two blocks...Woelkers added three more blocks as well for the Chargers.

Information Hodge Podge: This was the first-ever match between the two teams...The 64 kills are tied for the third-most in program history and are the most for Lancaster Bible since the Chargers smashed 67 in March 2010 against SUNY Poly...Miller's 82 total attempts are also a program-record, breaking the previous mark of 71 set by Gentry during the 2016 season.
