Chargers Clinch Playoff Berth with 1-0 Win

The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team clinched a North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff berth on Saturday, as the Chargers defeated Cazenovia, 1-0 in Cazenovia, N.Y. The victory sends the Chargers to 8-6-1 overall and 7-2 in NEAC play, while the Wildcats fell to 3-11 overall and 2-7 in conference action.
 
Game Recap: The teams exchanged shots in the opening 20 minutes, followed by each goalkeeper making a save over the next five minutes. The Chargers had back-to-back chances in the 29th minute, but Nathan Muckle's shot was blocked, and Joel Hughes' shot was saved by Cazenovia goalkeeper Tom Nicholls.
 
Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Jake Deterline made two saves late in the first half to keep the game scoreless after 45 minutes.
 
The Chargers took the game over in the second half, as they began to not only hold possession, but put more and more shots at the net. Lancaster Bible was finally rewarded at 72:24 when Trey Baughman took a pass from Kedric Yoder and scored his second goal of the season.
 
Cazenovia had a corner kick and a shot that went wide with just over 10 minutes remaining, but never threatened again, as the Chargers continued to pressure the Cazenovia side of the field.
 
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible outshot the Wildcats, 14-10, while each team had seven shots on goal…Cazenovia had five corner kicks, while the Chargers had three…Deterline finished with seven saves for his third shutout of the season…Yoder's assist was the first of his collegiate career.
 
The Coach Says: "Today was a tough test at Cazenovia, as they competed really well, especially in the first half," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "We made some adjustments and our guys were able to break them down with some consistency in the second half."
 
On Baughman's goal: "What a great finish by Trey to helps us get the victory, and solid work by our back line to get the shutout," Ardt said.
 
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 5-3 all-time against Cazenovia…The Chargers have won three straight, and four of five…Saturday marked the second straight game the Chargers have had 14 shots, and seven shots on goal…The Chargers are 4-3-1 on the road this season.
 
Up Next: Lancaster Bible takes on Morrisville State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
