Men's Basketball Zach Freeman

Red Dawn

The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team opens the 47th season in program history on Tuesday night, as the Chargers host Messiah at 7 p.m. at Horst Athletic Center. Lancaster Bible is coming off its second North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship in the past three seasons, as the Chargers defeated Morrisville State, 74-69 in the NEAC Final, before falling to Christopher Newport on a last-second 3-pointer in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

A lot has changed since the fateful bucket that ended Lancaster Bible's season on March 2, as Andrew Wingreen took over the head coaching position for the departed Zach Filzen, and the Chargers return just seven players from last season's team, and only four who had substantial playing time.

Lancaster Bible will be a young team for the 2018-19 season, but the leadership from the upperclassmen has excited Wingreen and his new staff of coaches, and he expects the Chargers to be competitive from the get-go, with the occasional growing pain on full display. The Chargers will waste little time getting into the thick of strong competition, as they not only open with Messiah, but will then face Salisbury this Friday, with another game against either DeSales or Johns Hopkins looming on Saturday.

The Chargers will open NEAC play late in November and play three conference contests before facing another tough four-game, non-conference stretch, and will then settle into conference play in mid-January.

Team Notes
-Lancaster Bible will play 12 home games this season at Horst Athletic Center, including five prior to Christmas Break
-The Chargers were 13-2 at home last season, and will enter this year on a 10-game home winning streak
-Of the 79.4 points per game the Chargers scored last season, just 30 points per game are returning with the seven players back from a season ago
-In 46 seasons of men's basketball, the Chargers are 464-710 (.395), though have posted a 139-90 (.607) mark since the beginning of the 2010-11 campaign
-The Chargers made 204 3-pointers a year ago, marking the third time in program history they have made 200 or more 3-pointers in a season…All three times have come in the past five years
-Lancaster Bible will trek North to Upstate New York twice this season, taking on Cazenovia on the first trip, and Wells and Keuka on the second trip
-New teams on the schedule this season include DeSales or Johns Hopkins (11.17.18 - depending on matchup in Salisbury Tournament), Centenary (12.8.18), Cabrini (1.5.19), and Cairn (1.29.19)
-The Chargers were selected third in the 2018-19 NEAC Preseason Poll

The Boss
-Andrew Wingreen was named the 13th head coach in program history on June 1, and will look to direct the Chargers back to the NEAC Playoffs for the sixth straight season
-Wingreen was an assistant coach at NAIA Bethel College (Ind.) last season, and served as an assist at Bob Jones University the previous five years before that
-Wingreen hopes to keep the Chargers' offense up-tempo, while also installing a stifling defense which should offset some of the offensive firepower last year's upperclassmen possessed
