Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Zach Freeman

Saturday Cruise

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team cruised to its third straight victory on Saturday, as they took a 4-3 lead one minute into the contest and never trailed again, crushing St. Elizabeth, 67-27 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers are now 15-8 overall and 13-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Eagles dropped to 7-15 overall and 4-10 in conference action.

How it Happened: St. Elizabeth's Rakiya Sellers opened the game with a 3-pointer for the Eagles just seven seconds into the game, but Lancaster Bible scored the next 12 points and held St. Elizabeth scoreless for over 6:30 to grab a 12-3 lead. Four different players scored for the Chargers during the run, as sophomore Caitlin Hickey had six of the 12 points.

The Eagles made a bit of a run in the final minutes of the quarter, and the Chargers led just 16-12 after 10 minutes of play. Lancaster Bible's defense held St. Elizabeth to just one point over the first five minutes of the second quarter, and used the solid defensive play to build a 25-13 lead after a three-point play from junior Courtney Goyak.

The Chargers continued to build their lead over the final 3:40 of the second quarter, as Lancaster Bible ended the half on an 11-0 run, as sophomore Emily Morgan and senior Kirsten Webster converted back-to-back three-point plays to give Lancaster Bible a 40-17 halftime lead.

Neither team shot overly well in the third quarter, but Lancaster Bible's defense continued to shine, as they held St. Elizabeth to just six points, and led 52-23 after 30 minutes of play.

The fourth quarter featured several players from each team's bench, but that didn't slow Lancaster Bible down one bit, as junior Sara Bell and sophomore RuthAnn Hostetler had terrific quarters for the Chargers. A layup from Bell and a jumper from Hostetler midway through the quarter gave Lancaster Bible a a 63-26 advantage, and Bell and freshman Leah Steiner knocked down the final baskets of the game as well for the Chargers, who won by 40 points for the first time since Feb. 20, 2016, when Lancaster Bible defeated Wilson, 107-45.

The Coach Says: "To be able to play everyone good minutes today was big for us," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "It gives everyone confidence when they can get minutes on the court and it makes us a more well-rounded team. We need to clean up the turnovers and be stronger with the ball, and continue to be strong defensively and keep our focus on both ends of the floor."
