Lancaster Bible Claims South Division Crown

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team clinched its sixth straight North Eastern Athletic Conference South Division title on Wednesday night, as the Chargers defeated Penn St. Abington, 71-56 in Abington, Pa. The victory moves the Chargers to 16-8 overall and 14-1 in NEAC play, while the Nittany Lions dropped to 13-10 overall and 8-7 in conference action. 

The Chargers will be the top seed in next Tuesday's NEAC Quarterfinals and will host the fourth seed from the South Division, which is yet to be determined. Lancaster Bible is currently tied with SUNY Poly for overall conference record (14-1) and both are still in the running to host the NEAC Final Four on Feb. 24-25.

1st Quarter Highlights:
-The teams traded baskets for the opening five minutes, as a jumper from freshman Leah Steiner tied the game at 7-7 with 5:41 to play
-Penn St. Abington eventually built a 16-11 lead with just over three minutes to play, but Lancaster Bible responded and used a 10-2 run over the final three minutes to grab a 21-18 lead after 10 minutes...Sophomore Kaylee Boger knocked down a 3-pointer to break a 16-16 tie, and freshman Lizzy Tilton converted a layup with one second to play in the quarter to finish off the run

2nd Quarter Highlights:
-Like the opening quarter, the teams exchanged buckets to not only begin the quarter, but for the majority of the second frame
-The Chargers took three separate five-point leads, but the Nittany Lions battled back each time, and wouldn't let Lancaster Bible extend the lead
-A late jumper from Penn St. Abington's Iman Richmond cut the Chargers lead to three, and they took that advantage into the half, 33-30

3rd Quarter Highlights:
-After Penn St. Abington cut the Chargers' lead to two, Lancaster Bible used a quick 5-0 run to grab a seven-point advantage, 42-35, thanks to a 3-pointer from senior Kirsten Webster
-A layup from sophomore Caitlin Hickey with 1:05 left in the quarter gave Lancaster Bible a 50-41 lead, and another late bucket from Tilton extended the Chargers' lead to 11 after 30 minutes of play

4th Quarter Highlights:
-Penn St. Abington made one more run early in the fourth quarter, and cut Lancaster Bible's lead to four, 58-54, but Lancaster Bible responded with a 9-0 run and put the game away
-During the run, Hickey had five points, while Tilton and junior Courtney Goyak added the other buckets
-The Chargers iced the game in the final 90 seconds, as Boger and Webster combined to go 4-of-4 from the free throw line

By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 27-of-67 (40.3 percent) from the field, and 14-of-17 from the free throw line...Penn St. Abington was 22-of-60 (36.7 percent) from the field, but just 6-of-12 from the free throw line...Webster finished with 23 points, six rebounds and three steals, as the senior was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line...Hickey added 15 points and three steals, while Goyak finished with 11 points, 20 rebounds and four assists...Tilton finished with second game in double figures this season with 10 points...Shayna Rodriguez had a game-high 28 points to lead Penn St. Abington.

The Coach Says: "Tonight was a great team win," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We did a great job defensively in the second half, and Kirsten did well attacking the basket, while Courtney finished strong at the hoop. It's nice to get a solid win on the road, as we look to finish strong on Saturday at home and head into the playoffs next week."

Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible defeated Penn St. Abington, 72-55 on Jan. 27 at Horst Athletic Center...The Chargers are 15-5 all-time against Penn St. Abington, and have defeated the Nittany Lions eight straight times...Wednesday marked the fifth time this season Webster has made 10 or more free throws in a game, and it was the eighth time this season she has made all of her free throws over the course of the contest...Goyak posted 20 or more rebounds for the 10th time this season...Lancaster Bible is 8-4 on the road this season.

Up Next: Lancaster Bible will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, as the Chargers host Bryn Athyn at 2 p.m...The Chargers will honor their lone senior, Kirsten Webster, prior to the contest.
