Chargers Stop Express

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team completed a perfect weekend in New York on Saturday, defeating Wells, 62-46 in Aurora, N.Y. The Chargers are now 14-8 overall and 12-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while Wells dropped to 6-14 overall and 5-6 in conference action.
 
1st Quarter Highlights:
-Lancaster Bible began the game well, as junior Courtney Goyak converted a layup to give the Chargers a 6-3 lead just 1:57 into the game, and sophomore Caitlin Hickey upped the advantage to 9-5 with a 3-pointer 35 seconds later
-Back-to-back free throws from senior Kirsten Webster gave the Chargers a 15-7 lead with 4:53 to play in the quarter, but those were the last points of the opening frame for the Chargers, who led 15-12 after 10 minutes of play
 
2nd Quarter Highlights:
-The Chargers continued to struggle from the field early in the second quarter and didn't score until freshman Lizzy Tilton's shot went through the hoop with 6:51 to play, and gave Lancaster Bible a 17-15 lead
-The teams traded baskets throughout the midway point of the quarter, but Lancaster Bible ended the half on a 7-0 run to grab a 30-27 advantage at the half…Hickey had 14 points after 20 minutes of play
 
3rd Quarter Highlights:
-Goyak scored the team's first five points of the second half, as her three-point play gave Lancaster Bible a 35-29 lead just 2:23 into the second half
-Webster drained a 3-pointer to make it 37-29 in favor of the Chargers, but Wells responded with five straight points to make it a three-point game
-After opening the quarter with five straight points, Goyak finished it with three straight points, as the Chargers led 46-36 after 30 minutes
 
4th Quarter Highlights:
-The teams traded baskets early in the quarter, as Lancaster Bible took a 50-39 lead with 7:34 to play after another bucket from Goyak
-Wells cut the Chargers' lead to 54-46 with 4:02 to play, but Lancaster Bible didn't allow another point, and scored the final eight of the game for the 16-point victory
 
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 25-of-51 (49 percent) from the floor, and 10-of-14 from the free throw line…Wells shot 18-of-55 (32.7 percent) from the field, including 4-of-20 from 3-point range…Webster had 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and added four assists…Hickey finished with 18 points and six rebounds, while Goyak had 16 points and 18 boards on 7-of-9 shooting…Tilton added four points and three rebounds…Kamarie Maturine had 13 points and eight rebounds for Wells.

The Coach Says: "I was really proud of our defense today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We played solid for all four quarters, and though our offense struggled at times, we found our way in the second half. Courtney was solid on both ends of hte floor today, and this was a big weekend for us, so it's great to go 2-0."
 
Information Hodge Podge: The Chargers improved to 9-1 all-time against Wells…The lone loss continues to be the 2014 NEAC Championship, when the Express defeated the Chargers, 67-60 at Horst Athletic Center…Saturday marked the fourth time this season the Chargers have allowed 50 points or fewer in a game…Webster had her 10th 20-point game of the season on Saturday.
 
Up Next: Lancaster Bible is off until next Saturday, when the Chargers host St. Elizabeth at 3 p.m.…Lancaster Bible defeated St. Elizabeth, 57-50 on Dec. 9 in Morristown, N.J.
