The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team set a program-record with its ninth straight victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Wells, 3-1 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers won, 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, and improved to 19-4 overall and 6-0 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Express dropped to 17-7 overall and 5-1 in conference action.
1st Set Highlights:
-Lancaster Bible won four of the five first points of the match, but Wells responded, and tied the set at 4-4
-The Chargers built an 8-5 lead, as senior
Derek Bigley capped the run with an ace
-The teams went back-and-forth from there, and Lancaster Bible tied the match at 12-12 on an error by Wells
-The Express would eventually lead, 15-14, but Lancaster Bible won six straight points later in the set to take a 22-16 lead
-Bigley had another ace during the six-point run, while fellow senior Kasey Gentry added a kill
-Wells cut its deficit to 22-18, but Lancaster Bible got a kill from Gentry, followed by two errors from Wells to take the set, 25-18
2nd Set Highlights:
-The teams again exchanged points to open the second set, but Lancaster Bible won five of six points midway through to grab a 13-10 advantage
-Sophomore Kole Horst and junior Daniel Kreider posted back-to-back kills to cap the run
-Wells fought back and tied the set at 16-16, but again, the Chargers won five of six points, and took a 21-17 lead
-Gentry and Kreider had kills during the run, while the Express committed three errors
-A kill from junior Nate Miller gave the set to the Chargers, 25-19
3rd Set Highlights:
-Wells opened the third set by winning five of seven points and eventually led, 7-5
-The Chargers cut their deficit to 8-7, but Wells won three straight points to take a four-point lead
-Lancaster Bible continued to battle, and won six of eight points to take a 16-15 lead on a block assist by Woelkers and Gentry
-Wells climbed back into the lead, 23-20, but after a timeout, Lancaster Bible tied the set at 23-23 on a ball-handling error by the Express
-The Express called timeout and then won the final two points of the set, to trail the match, 2-1
4th Set Highlights:
-Lancaster Bible jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the fourth set, as Miller blasted an ace to end the early run
-The Chargers stayed in the lead, though Wells cut its deficit to 12-10 on a kill from Brannon Perdicho
-Lancaster Bible began to pull away, as the Chargers won three of four points, ending with a solo block by Kreider
-The Express hung around and cut the Chargers' lead to one on several occasions, including 24-23
-Lancaster Bible closed the match out however, as Gentry hit home a kill to give the Chargers a 25-23 fourth set victory
By the Numbers: For the match, Lancaster Bible had 49 kills and 23 errors on 124 attempts for a 21.0 hitting percentage...The Express had 42 kills and 28 errors on 122 attempts for a 11.5 hitting percentage...The Chargers held a 13-6 advantage in blocks, while Wells held a 45-44 edge in digs...Miller finished with a match-high 21 kills, and also added six digs and three aces...Horst added 10 kills, 10 digs and a block, while Gentry had eight kills, five blocks and five digs...Kreider finished with seven kills and seven blocks, while Woelkers had two kills and three blocks...Sophomore Kaleb Ansell had a match-high 49 assists...Brannon Perdicho had a team-high 14 kills for Wells.
Information Hodge Podge: Lancaster Bible is now 5-7 all-time against Wells...The Express defeated the Chargers 3-2 in last season's NEAC Semifinals...Saturday marked the sixth time this season the Chargers have had 49 kills or more in a match this season...The 13 blocks are a season-best for Lancaster Bible...The nine straight wins break the record of last season's team which won eight straight matches.
