The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday as the Chargers lost to defending North Eastern Athletic Conference champion Penn St. Abington, 1-0 in Abington, Pa. The loss drops the Chargers to 3-2-1 overall this season and 2-1 in NEAC play, while the Nittany Lions improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
Game Recap: The game, hotly contested for all 90 minutes, got off to a bit of a slow start, as the teams combined for just one shot in the opening 20 minutes. Kedirc Yoder had his shot saved at the 20:22 mark, while Chargers' goalkeeper
Jake Deterline made his first save of the game five minutes later.
After another Lancaster Bible shot by
Chad Tolson at 34:11, Penn St. Abington's Hernando Villamil scored at 37:34 to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Neither team could do much in the final minutes of the first half, as the Chargers trailed by one at the break.
After a brief scuffle between some players on each team early in the second half, Deterline made another save to keep it 1-0, and
Trey Baughman sent a chance high of the net at 56:38.
Deterline would eventually make four saves in the second half to keep the Chargers in the game, but the offense couldn't convert any chances late in the game, as the Chargers lost, 1-0.
By the Numbers: Penn St. Abington outshot the Chargers, 14-4, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal...Deterline finished with five saves for the Chargers...Baughman led the Chargers with two shots...In addition to scoring the game's only goal, Villamil led the Nittany Lions with seven shots.
The Coach Says: "Our game today revealed a lot - that Abington is still one of the top teams in the conference, but also that we can play at that level," Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "They controlled most of the play, but we defended securely. We'll need to counter attack much more clinically next time, but the effort and intensity was great to see today."
