The Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team won its fourth straight match on Tuesday night, defeating rival Cairn, 3-0 at Horst Athletic Center. The Chargers won, 25-23, 25-23, 25-15, and improved to 10-5 this season, while the Highlanders fell to 3-10.
Match Recap: The first set was a battle of scoring runs, as each team would earn points in bunches, and then give them away in bunches. Cairn took five of seven points midway through the opening set, and grabbed a 14-11 lead after a kill from Lyntia Gwess, who would have 11 on the night. Lancaster Bible responded with seven of the next nine points, and led 18-16 after a kill from
Kacey Smith.
The Highlanders would eventually tie the set at 20-20, and take a 22-21 lead. The Chargers got a kill from
Ashtyn Bouslog to tie the set at 22-22, and after a Cairn error,
Jenny Mulvey quick-served out of a timeout, and gave Lancaster Bible a 24-22 advantage. A kill from Bouslog a point later would give the home team the set, 25-23.
After Cairn won the opening three points of the second set, the Chargers took 10 of the next 12 points, to take a 10-5 lead. Mulvey was key again during the run, as she had three aces, while
Aleah Heyworth,
Courtney Goyak and
Erin Harkey all had kills during the scoring run as well.Â
The Highlanders wouldn't go away, and tied the match at 14-14, after winning six of seven points. Lancaster Bible withstood the run, and earned eight of the next 11 points, and led 22-17 after another kill from
Hannah Gipe. The trend continued however, and Cairn won the next five points to tie the set at 22-22, but Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Micah Herron refused to call timeout and let the team handle its business, which it did, by winning three of the final four points, capped by a kill from Smith.
Mulvey opened the third set on a serving barrage, as she had three more aces, and the Chargers jumped out to a 7-0 lead. There would be no comeback from Cairn in the final set, as the Chargers put their foot on the gas, and led 14-4 after a kill from
Bekah Roberts. The Chargers maintained their lead, and late kills from
Martina McCauley and
Allison Shuey, gave the Chargers the set and the match.
