Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Win Wild Match

Someone should tell the Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team they don't need to go down two sets to one in order to win a volleyball match. On the other hand, if it leads to more victories, perhaps everyone should just keep quiet.

The Chargers earned their third straight come-from-behind victory on Tuesday night in Bethlehem, Pa., as Lancaster Bible defeated Moravian, 3-2. The 25-17, 23-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-7 win propels the Chargers to 9-8 overall this season, while the Greyhounds dropped to 8-12.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible cruised to a 25-17 first-set victory, as the Chargers won six of the final seven points of the set, and opened up a 1-0 lead. Moravian took the second set, and then hammered the Chargers in the third set, as the Greyhounds won 11 of 12 points midway through the third frame to take a 15-4 advantage.

The craziness began in the fourth set, as the Chargers trailed, 9-3 early in the set, but battled back to grab an 11-10 lead after an ace from Allison Shuey. The Greyhounds came right back, and took a 21-14 lead after an ace of their own.

From that point however, Lancaster Bible owned the match and went on a 15-point run to end the fourth set and begin the fifth. Ashtyn Bouslog had six aces during the run that ended the fourth set, and an attack error from Moravian gave the Chargers a 25-21 fourth-set victory.

After 11 straight points to end the fourth set, Lancaster Bible won the first four of the fifth set, as Bouslog was at it again, and had two aces. Lancaster Bible led 6-1 after a kill from Cassidy King, and then 8-2 after a block assist from Emma Thomann and King. The Greyhounds cut the Chargers lead to 13-7 later in the set, but a kill from Aleah Heyworth, followed by a Moravian error, gave Lancaster Bible the set and match.

Statistically Speaking: Lancaster Bible had 41 kills and 23 errors on 155 attempts for a .116 hitting percentage, while the Greyhounds had 45 kills and 33 errors on 175 attempts for a .069 hitting percentage…Lancaster Bible had 20 aces for just the third time in program history, and held a 20-15 lead in the statistic…The Chargers also led in digs, 82-79, while Moravian led in blocks, 7-6…Heyworth led the Chargers with 13 kills, 12 digs and two blocks, while Cassidy King had seven kills, eight digs and two blocks…Bekah Roberts finished with eight kills and four blocks, while Bouslog had eight kills, a program-record-tying 12 aces, and 13 digs…Shuey had 32 assists, five aces, and 10 digs…Suzanna Whiting added 22 digs, while Kate Smoker had two kills, two aces and 13 digs.

The Coach Says: "We asserted ourselves in the first set, and then we seem to like digging," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Micah Herron said. "We dig ourselves into a hole in sets two and three, and then dig ourselves out of that hole in sets four and five. I'm thrilled we won, and proud of the fight from the team, but we've got to find a way to not play like that in the second and third set."

On the Overall Team Play: "I told the team before the match, 'Our inability to succeed is directly correlated to our inability to work hard and be productive,'" Herron said. "We are trying to be productive and consistent across the board, and I think are growing into that, but obviously have some work to do."

News & Notes: Tuesday's contest was the first-ever match between the two schools…The Chargers are now 5-2 in true road matches this season…Bouslog's 12 aces tie the program record, which was set by Brittney Becker on Oct. 19, 2010 against Washington Adventist…The 20 team aces are the most since Lancaster Bible set the program mark of 27 against Washington Adventist on Oct. 19, 2010…The Chargers also had 23 aces against Bryn Athyn on Oct. 18, 2008.
