Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Fit to be Tied

The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team got a late goal on Saturday afternoon and salvaged a tie with Penn College, as the Chargers and Wildcats finished in a 1-1 double overtime tie in Williamsport, Pa. The tie sends the Chargers to 7-2-1overall and 3-1-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Wildcats are now 1-8-2 overall and 1-3-2 in NEAC action.

How it Happened: Both teams had chances in the first 20 minutes of the contest, as each team had a corner kick and at least one shot on target. Jake Deterline made two early saves for the Chargers, while Braeden Eckard made one save. Lancaster Bible made a defensive save midway through the opening half to preserve the scoreless tie, and Joel Hughes' shot went high over the goal just prior to halftime.

Again both teams had chances early in the second half, but it would take until 69:03 for anything to appear on the scoreboard, as Penn College's Colton Wartman scored his fourth goal of the season off a pass from Greg Conkle to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.

Eckard would make three saves over the next 15 minutes to keep the Wildcats in front, but Lancaster Bible earned a corner kick with under a minute to play. Kedric Yoder's cross found Chad Tolson, and he deposited the ball into the back of the net with 48 seconds to play, and tied the game at 1-1.

Eckard made two more saves in the first overtime, and Penn College's lone shot went high with under a minute remaining in the first overtime. Lancaster Bible peppered the Penn College goal in the second overtime, as the Chargers had five shots in the first 6:50 of the fourth period. Michael Eufemia's try at 105:31 hit the crossbar, and Dan Bewersdorff hit the post just over three minutes later.

Deterline had to make one last key save, as he stopped Matthew Yoder's shot with 24 seconds remaining.

Statistically Speaking: Lancaster Bible outshot the Wildcats, 19-17, though each team had 11 shots on goal…The Chargers had eight of their 19 shots in the second overtime…Lancaster Bible led in corner kicks, 7-6, while each team had 10 saves…Tolson's goal was his third of the season…Yoder is tied for the team-lead with four assists, and he, Tolson and Eufemia each have a team-best 10 points this season.

The Coach Says: "We didn't respond well early to how Penn College was defending our midfield, and credit to Penn College for a good game plan," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "We started finding space after they scored, and thankfully were able to score late to tie it. We'll need good preparation for this week with three games."

News & Notes: Lancaster Bible is now 5-1-1 all-time against Penn College…The Chargers defeated the Wildcats twice last season, the first coming on a late penalty kick goal by Joel Hughes in October that gave the Chargers a 2-1 victory, while the second came in the NEAC Semifinals in Abington, Pa., which the Chargers won, 4-1…Lancaster Bible is now 2-0-1 on the road this season…Lancaster Bible is outscoring its opponents 12-5 in the second half of games this season.
