Chargers Crack the Win Column

The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team secured its first win of the 2019-20 season on Saturday evening, defeating Marywood, 85-74 in the consolation game of the William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament at Franklin & Marshall. The victory propels the Chargers to 1-2 this season, while the Pacers dropped to 0-4.
 
How it Happened: The Chargers trailed, 8-4 early in the first half, but used a 9-3 run to grab a 13-11 lead after two free throws from Jackson Henri. Four Different players scored during the run, including Jordan Shewbridge, Tyler Hilton, and Kobe Devine. The teams traded baskets for the better part of the rest of the half, as William Afoakwah converted a layup with 6:42 remaining to give the Chargers a 25-22 advantage.
 
The Pacers took a quick one-point lead late in the first half, but Lancaster Bible ended the half on an 8-1 run capped by a layup from Luke Beers with two seconds to play, and the Chargers led, 37-32 after 20 minutes of play.
 
Lancaster Bible maintained a single-digit lead for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but a three-point play from Afoakwah with 10:49 remaining gave the Chargers a 53-43 lead. The lead kept growing, and eventually became a 14-2 run that Tyler Norris capped with a layup, and gave Lancaster Bible a 60-43 advantage.
 
The Chargers grew their lead to 20 on a layup from Hilton with 6:03 to play, and though Marywood closed the gap to single digits in the final two minutes of play, Lancaster Bible sank free throws to put the game away and earn the win.
 
Statistically Speaking: Lancaster Bible shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field, but just 25 percent (4-of-16) from 3-point range…Lancaster Bible was also 25-of-37 from the free throw line…Marywood shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the floor, but like the Chargers, just 25 percent (6-of-24) from 3-point range…Afoakwah led all scorers with 30 points, and also added seven rebounds and a steal…He was 9-of-12 from the field, and 12-of-13 from the free throw line…Beers had 10 points and four boards, and Norris was the other player in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds…Jackson Henri had eight points and seven boards, while Caleb Carpenter had six points and two boards.
 
News & Notes: Lancaster Bible is now 1-2 all-time against Marywood …The last time the Chargers faced the Pacers was Feb. 12, 2008 in Lancaster, and Marywood won, 66-65…Lancaster Bible was 0-2 in neutral site games last season…Lancaster Bible led 46-34 in points in the paint, and 25-7 in bench points…Afoakwah is the first Lancaster Bible player with 30 points since last season when Quentin Davis accomplished the feat twice, including when he had 32 against SUNY Poly in the NEAC Semifinals on February 23, 2019…Afoakwah is 17-of-18 from the free throw line so far this season...Afoakwah was named to the All-Tournament Team for two-game performance.
