Late Rally Sinks Chargers at Washington (Md.)

The Lancaster Bible College baseball team played its first game back from spring break on Tuesday, and was welcomed back north by an unbeaten Washington (Md.) team in Chestertown, Md. The Chargers battled, and led 2-1 late in the game, but the Shoremen scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 6-2 victory. The loss drops Lancaster bible to 3-5 overall this season, while Washington (Md.) improved to 14-0.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible opened the scoring in the top of the first, as Josh Saufley led off with a single, and then advanced to second when Colin Myers was hit by a pitch. Saufley advanced to third on a foul out by Luis Padilla Jr., and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Will Welsh.

The Shoremen answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but starter Tyler Greenly worked out of a jam, and the game remained tied after one inning of play. Lancaster Bible loaded the bases in the top of the third, but Jacob Schenck grounded into a fielder's choice, and the game remained tied.

The game turned into a pitcher's duel following the third inning, as Greenly was brilliant for the Chargers. Greenly pitched six strong innings, and did not allow a hit after the second inning. Zach Clemens took over in the seventh, and overcame an error in the inning to strand two Washington (Md.) runners.

Lancaster Bible loaded the bases in the eighth inning, as Saufley singled followed by walks to Myers and Padilla. Welsh came to the plate with three on, and also drew a walk for his second RBI of the game, as the Chargers took a 2-1 lead. Washington (Md.) got two strikeouts with the bases loaded to end the inning and limit the damage, something that would come back to haunt the Chargers in the bottom half of the inning.

After a leadoff walk, Washington (Md.) connected for back-to-back doubles off of Clemens, and grabbed a 3-2 lead. A single made it 4-2 in favor of the Shoremen, and they tacked on two more runs and led by four heading into the ninth. Mike VanDame walked in the top of the ninth with two outs, but Lancaster Bible couldn't make a late charge, and the Shoremen stayed unbeaten.
