Chargers Split Doubleheader to Cap Regular Season

Game 1
Lancaster Bible 5, Penn St. Abington 3
How it Happened: After two scoreless innings, Lancaster Bible got on the board in the top of the third, as Colin Myers singled to left, and Josh Saufley singled to right later in the inning to put runners on the corners. With Nate McFarland at the plate, Myers scored on a balk to give the Chargers an early 1-0 lead.
 
The Chargers extended the lead in the fourth inning, as Jacob Schenck, Jake Hahn and Jaden Pinkney hit three straight singles to load the bases. Myers drew a walk and scored Schenck, and after a second out, Saufley singled to left and scored Myers and Pinkney to make it 4-0.
 
Penn St. Abington scored in the bottom of the fourth, and then scored two more times in the sixth to make it 4-3, but Lancaster Bible added an insurance run in the seventh when Saufley doubled, and then scored on a single by McFarland.
 
The Nittany Lions put two runners on in their final at-bat in the bottom half of the inning, but Trevor High got Tyler Dipatri to fly out and end the game, and the Chargers had dealt Penn St. Abington just its third conference loss of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score: Lancaster Bible had hits in game one, and Saufley had four of them, as he went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run…Myers finished 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs and an RBI, while Schenck and Pinkney were 1-for-3 with a run…Dan Zimmerman was terrific on the hill, as he went 5 1/3 innings, and allowed just four hits and three runs…High pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up three hits, while striking out two.
 
Game 2
Penn St. Abington 13, Lancaster Bible 6
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible plated three runs in the top of the first, as singles from McFarland and Will Welsh wrapped around a walk from Luis Padilla Jr., to load the bases with one out. After a sacrifice fly from Schenck scored McFarland, Hahn doubled down the left field line to score Padilla and Welsh.
 
Penn St. Abington took the lead in the bottom of the second, as the home team scored four runs on six hits, and grabbed a one-run lead. The Nittany Lions tacked on two more runs in the third, as two more hits and an error by the Chargers, gave Penn St. Abington a 6-3 advantage.
 
The Nittany Lions led 8-3 after four innings, but Lancaster Bible got a run back in the fifth on an RBI single from Pinkney. Penn St. Abington scored four more times in the seventh inning for a 12-4 lead, and eventually won, 13-6.
 
Inside the Box Score: McFarland had a terrific game two, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored…Hahn was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Mike VanDame was 1-for-4 with a run…Welsh and Schenck were each 1-for-4 with a run…Senior Tyler Greenly threw six innings, and allowed six earned runs and struck out two…Jacob Stong pitched the final two innings, and allowed four hits and four runs.
 
Information Hodge Podge: With the doubleheader split, the Chargers are now 5-15 all-time against Penn St. Abington…Lancaster Bible is 2-9 all-time at Penn St. Abington…The Chargers capped the regular season with a 3-12 record on the road…Welsh finished the regular season with 58 hits, as he hit .453 and had 100 total bases and 43 runs knocked in.
 
Up Next: Lancaster Bible will need to wait and see how the results play out on the final day of the regular season on Sunday, as the Chargers still have an outside chance at a NEAC playoff bid.
