Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Pass First Road Test

The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team returned to the win column on Wednesday night in the nation's capital, as the Chargers defeated Gallaudet, 2-1. Lancaster Bible is now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Bison dropped to 0-7-1 overall and 0-3 in conference action.

How it Happened: The game began slowly for both teams, as the Bison recorded the game's first shot 10 minutes into the contest, and the Chargers didn't register their first shot until the 24:16 mark when Chad Tolson's shot went wide. From that time however, the Chargers peppered the Gallaudet goal, though none of the shots found the back of the net in the first half.

Lancaster Bible continued its onslaught of the Gallaudet goal early in the second half, as Rama Mugisha registered three shots in the opening five minutes. After having his first two chances saved by Gallaudet Shane Angel, his third opportunity found the back of the net, as he put home a rebound to give the Chargers a 1-0 advantage at 49:29.

Lancaster Bible fired four more shots over the next four minutes as well looking to add to the lead, but Angel was up to the task on three of the four shots, and the other went high. The Chargers finally did get their insurance goal at 73:51, as passes from Caleb Nelson and Rusty Risteen found the foot of Kedric Yoder, who put home a shot from close range, and made it 2-0 in favor or the Chargers.

Nelson hit the post less than two minutes later, and Lancaster Bible had several more chances late in the game as well. With under 15 seconds to play, Gallaudet earned a corner kick, and Kevin Fitzpatrick spoiled the shutout with one second remaining, as he scored his first goal of the season at 89:59.

Statistically Speaking: Lancaster Bible outshot the Bison, 24-6, including 14-5 in shots on goal…Lancaster Bible held a 15-5 edge in shots in the second half…Isaac Barrow started his first-ever collegiate game on Wednesday and made four saves for his first collegiate win…The Chargers led in corner kicks as well, 5-2…Both goals by Mugisha and Yoder were their second of the year.

The Coach Says: "Our focus is on playing our best soccer every time we step onto the field, whether it's in training or in a game," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "Today, we are thankful for the win, but still hungry to sharpen several areas. The positive was our ability to create chances after the halftime break, but we gave up too much on their counters. We are excited to work on things as we continue to prepare for games."
