Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Zach Freeman

Chargers Edge Cairn in Overtime

The Lancaster Bible College women's soccer team posted its first victory of the 2019 season on Friday night under lights at the Donald H. Funk Field, as the Chargers earned a 2-1 overtime win over long-time rival Cairn. The victory propels the Chargers to 1-2 this season, while the Highlanders fell to 0-2-1, as sophomore Bryanna Hoover was the hero with the overtime goal.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible had two early shots in the first 10 minutes of the game, but Cairn goalkeeper Krystin Jarvis made two saves to keep the game scoreless. The teams exchanged possession for much of the first half, though the Chargers did outshoot the Highlanders, 5-1 over the opening 45 minutes.

The teams went to halftime scoreless, but Cairn earned a corner kick just over six minutes into the second half, and were rewarded with a goal 11 seconds later, as Sara Hayduchuk scored her first goal of the year off a feed from Katie Jordan to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Lancaster Bible didn't panic however, and scored its first goal of the 2019 season five minutes later, as senior Maggie Arnold received a pass from Samantha Koons, and knotted the game at 1-1 at 56:54.

The Chargers continued to pressure the Cairn defense, and had two late corner kicks and three shots, but Jarvis was up to the task again with two saves, and another went wide, and the teams went to overtime tied at 1-1.

The Highlanders had the first chance of overtime, as they earned a corner kick 1:09 into the period. Cairn couldn't connect on the play, and the Chargers went the other way, where Arnold found Bryanna Hoover, who scored off the left post and into the back of the net to give the Chargers their first win of the 2019 campaign.

Statistically Speaking: Lancaster Bible held a 14-4 edge in shots, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal…Each team had two corner kicks…Jarvis made five saves for the Highlanders, while Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Erin Mikula had two saves for her first win of the year…Arnold finished with three points, as she had a goal and an assist.

The Coach Says: "The girls played so well tonight," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Ally Long said. "We dominated possession for a lot of the game, and I liked that we overcame a deficit, and then after we scored to tie it, we kept up the pressure. What we have been practicing was produced on the field tonight, and that is a great step for our team. I thought we did a great job as a team tonight, from the players on the field, to the support from the bench, this was an entire team victory."
