Chargers Complete Weekend Sweep in Ohio

The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team completed a perfect opening weekend on Saturday, as the Chargers defeated Augustana (Ill.) and Mount St. Joseph by identical 3-1 scores at the Jim Coleman Invitational in Springfield, Ohio. The Chargers are now 3-0 overall this season, and this marks the second time in three seasons that Lancaster Bible has gone a perfect 3-0 at the invitational which is hosted by Wittenberg University.

Match Recap: The Chargers jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the opening set thanks to kills from Kyran Flahive and Jacob Faust, followed by an Augustana error, and held off a late charge from the Vikings to win the opening set…The second set went back-and-forth and was tied 20-20, before a kill from Flahive, followed by an ace from Benjamin Herb, and a block assist from Kole Horst and Zeke Hallman gave Lancaster Bible a 23-20 lead, which they then turned into a 25-22 set two victory…Each team fought of set points in the third frame before the Vikings won the final three points and earned a 29-27 win…The Chargers recovered and won six of the first seven points of the fourth set, and eventually took the match 3-1 thanks to Flahive's match-ending kill.
 
Statistically Speaking: Lancaster Bible had 53 kills and 18 errors on 122 attempts for a .287 hitting percentage…Augustana had 50 kills and 32 errors on 134 attempts for a .134 hitting percentage…Each team had 47 digs, while the Chargers held a 14-6 edge in blocks…Horst led the way with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Herb added 13 kills, nine digs, five blocks and two aces…Flahive had 10 kills, 10 digs, and three blocks…Reuben Kemrer had 48 assists, six digs, and a block…Hallman finished with seven kills, 10 blocks, and a dig…Faust had seven kills and three blocks.
 
News & Notes: This was the first-ever match between the two schools…Hallman's 10 blocks are just the fourth time in program history a Lancaster Bible player has had double-digit blocks in a single match, and Hallman joins Jason Glerum and Corey Leonard as the other players with 10 blocks…Ken Diller holds the program mark of 11 blocks, as he accomplished the feat on Feb. 15, 2014 at SUNY Poly.

Match Recap: Lancaster Bible took control of the opening set midway through the first frame, as back-to-back kills from Flahive and Horst earned the Chargers a 16-10 lead…The Lions fought back to make it 17-15 in favor of the Chargers, but Lancaster Bible won the final eight points of the set, and kills from Herb and Horst gave the opening frame to the Chargers…Mount St. Joseph led for almost the entire second set, but Lancaster Bible tied it at 23-23, but couldn't complete the comeback, and the Lions took the final two points, and tied the match at 1-1…Lancaster Bible won eight of nine points early in the third set to take a 13-6 lead, and the Chargers never relinquished it, earning a 25-19 set three win that Herb ended with a kill…Lancaster Bible took another early lead in the fourth set thanks to service errors from the Lions and another kill from Herb that made it 11-5, and Lancaster Bible rolled the rest of the way, and won, 25-16.
 
Statistically Speaking: Lancaster Bible had 49 kills and 18 errors on 106 attempts for a .292 hitting percentage…Mount St. Joesph had 48 kills and 25 errors on 124 attempts for a .185 hitting percentage…The Chargers held a 45-35 edge in digs, and a 5-2 advantage in blocks…Herb led the Chargers with 15 kills, six digs, and three blocks…Horst added 13 kills and five digs, while Flahive had 10 kills, 10 digs, two aces, and two blocks…Kemrer had 36 assists and 11 digs to go with three kills…Hallman posted six kills, while Joshua Hess had eight digs.
 
News & Notes: Lancaster Bible is now 2-0 all-time against Mount St. Joseph…The Chargers defeated the Lions, 3-0 last season in Harrisonburg, Va., as the teams took part in a tri-match at Eastern Mennonite…Lancaster Bible is 3-0 in neutral site matches so far this season, and the team posted a 4-2 mark in neutral site matches a season ago… This is the first time the Chargers have ever been 3-0 to start a season…Through three matches, Lancaster Bible already has 100 more kills than errors (141-40), and is hitting .351...Kemrer was named to the All-Tournament Team following the last match.
 
Up Next: Lancaster Bible is back in action next Saturday, as the Chargers head to Arlington, Va. to take on Marymount at 1 p.m., and Penn St. Altoona at 3 p.m.
