Blue Jays Clip Chargers in Overtime

The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team ended non-conference play with a 78-74 overtime loss to Elizabethtown on Tuesday night in Elizabethtown, Pa. The Chargers are now 2-8 overall, while the Blue Jays improved to 7-4 overall.
 
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible scored the first seven points of the contest, as a 3-pointer from Jordan Shewbridge followed by baskets from Britton Beachy and William Afoakwah gave the Chargers a 7-0 lead 1:32 into the game. Elizabethtown answered with an 8-0 run of its own, but another 3-pointer from Shewbridge gave the Chargers a 10-8 lead 3:37 into the first half.
 
The teams exchanged baskets for the next 10 minutes, but Elizabethtown opened up a 23-16 lead with 6:12 remaining on a jumper from Wyatt Hockenberry. Lancaster Bible didn't go away however, and Shewbridge's third 3-pointer of the first half with 3:04 remaining gave the Chargers a 26-25 lead. Shewbridge capped his unbelievable first half in style, as he scored the final 11 points of the half for the Chargers, and his layup with 36 seconds to play gave him 18 points in the half, and the Chargers a 31-28 halftime lead.
 
Lancaster Bible kept up the pressure at the beginning of the second half, and used an 8-1 run over the first 2:46 of the frame to open up a 39-29 advantage. The Blue Jays slowly chipped away at their deficit, and tied the game at 41-41 with 13:14 remaining. Each team took a turn with a small lead later in the second half, and the Blue Jays led, 63-61 with under a minute to play, but Britton Beachy knocked down two free throws with 18 seconds to play, and sent the game to overtime.
 
The teams continued to go back and forth in the overtime period, and Afoakwah's layup with 2:59 remaining gave the Chargers a 69-68 lead. It would be the last for the Chargers however, as Elizabethtown scored the next six points of the game to take a 74-69 advantage. Brett Bechler's 3-pointer with 31 seconds left brought the Chargers to within two, and Lancaster Bible cut the deficit to two again with a jumper from Beachy with eight seconds left, but Elizabethtown knocked down free throws with five seconds to go, and put the game away.
 
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) from the floor, including 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from 3-point range…The Chargers shot just 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from the free throw line…Shewbridge finished with a career-high 27 points, as he set a career record for points in a game for the third time this season…Shewbridge was 11-of-21 from the field, including 5-of-15 from beyond the arc…Afoakwah had a double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 20 rebounds…Beachy added 10 points, four assists, and four rebounds…Bechler was a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point range, and had nine points and three steals…Bryce Greene led Elizabethtown with 22 points.
 
News & Notes: Lancaster Bible is now 2-6 all-time against Elizabethtown…Tuesday marked the first meeting between the two teams since November 17, 2015 when the Chargers defeated the Blue Jays, 90-77 in what would be the first of 27 straight victories for the 2015-16 squad…Lancaster Bible finished 2-7 in non-conference play this season…Shewbridge's previous career best was 26 points which he had on December7 at Morrisville State…Shewbridge has scored 23 or more points four times this season, and has posted double figures in five of 10 games this season…Lancaster Bible's 22 turnovers were the second-most the Chargers have had this season.
 
Up Next: Lancaster Bible returns to North Eastern Athletic Conference play this weekend, as the Chargers host Keuka on Saturday at 1 p.m., and Wells on Sunday at 12 p.m.
