How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team dropped a nonconference battle with Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, November 13 by a score of 76-62.
Â
The Chargers offense got off to a slow start, only scoring two points in the opening five minutes of the game. LBC's defense would keep them in the game, as the team put pressure on the Royals' offense holding them to just five points during the same five-minute span.
Jenna Dombach launched a 3-pointer, tying the game at five. Later in the quarter trailing by four,
Lizzy Tilton knocked down a jump shot. The Royals then found their rhythm, going on a 8-0 run to seize momentum.
Alaysha Iwais knocked a pair of jumpers before the end of the quarter, but the Chargers trailed 17-13.
Â
LBC capitalized on the momentum they gained at the end of the quarter with
Sydney Heller coming away with a steal and then scoring in transition to cut the deficit down to two.
Tenia Brown followed that up with a layup, tying the game at 17. Later in the quarter, Heller connected on a 3-pointer, giving LBC its first lead of the game. Eastern Mennonite would answer back, launching into a 12-0 run that gave the Royals a 31-20 lead with 3:36 remaining in the quarter. Dombach stopped the run with a jump shot, but the Royals tacked on six more points to hold a 37-22 lead at the half.
Â
The Chargers tried to battle back in the third quarter. Midway through the quarter, Tilton began rolling, knocking down a 3-pointer after making a pair of free throws. Heller and Dombach would both earn trips to the free throw line converting their opportunities. As a team, LBC went 18-22 at the free throw line, shooting over 81 percent. The Royals seemed to always have an answer, leading by as many as 25 points in the quarter. The Chargers would close the quarter by going on a 10-2 run capped off with a buzzer beater from
Kenzie Baughman; however, the team trailed by 15 points going to the final quarter.
Â
LBC would use the momentum they carried over from the third quarter to close within nine points off a layup by Tilton. The Royals would not let the Chargers get any closer, going on an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach, winning 76-62.

Coaching Points
"My challenge to them at halftime was for them to earn a grit card and I thought we showed a lot of grit in the second half," said head coach
Joy Tharrington. "I thought in the second quarter, EMU out hustled us and played with more defensive intensity. Our bench came in and contributed, showing the depth we have. I thought Lizzy responded as a leader, that was an area I challenged her in after the last game. I could feel her presence on the court making key plays for us. It was great to see Jenna get going tonight, reaching double figures. She will be important to our offense moving forward."Â
