How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team had an offensive explosion, defeating Cabrini University by a score of 106-90 on Saturday, December 11.
Â
The Chargers (5-4 Overall, 2-0 United East) got off to a strong start, with
Seth Beers knocking down a jump shot to open the scoring.
Jordan Shewbridge found his rhythm early on swishing a jumper from on the baseline to put LBC ahead 6-5. After Cabrini (4-6 Overall) tied the game at six,
Tyler Hilton swished a 3-pointer from the wing to put LBC back in front. Having captured the momentum, the Chargers upped the defensive pressure, using their defense to spark a 10-0 run. The Cavaliers answered back, connecting on a 3-pointer of their own to start to rally back eventually tying the game at 18. Shewbridge knocked down a pull up jumper in the lane, retaking a 20-18 lead. Later in the half trailing by one, Beers swished a 3-pointer from the wing to give LBC a two-point advantage.
Grant Sareyka extended the lead to four, slashing into the paint for a layup.
Maureon Tisdale-Couch gathered an offensive rebound on the next possession and put back a layup to make the score 28-21. Shewbridge then connected on a deep 3-pointer to put LBC ahead by 10, capping off an 11-0 run. After the Cavaliers hit a 3-pointer to pull back within six points, Shewbridge connected again from beyond the arc, making the score 36-27. The teams traded baskets, with Shewbridge working the give-and-go with
Adam Stoltzfus, hitting a layup and drawing a foul to complete a three-point play. Sareyka swiped a steal and sprinted to the other end of the floor to put LBC up by eight. With under a minute to play, Beers drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to go up by 11 points. After a defensive stop, Shewbridge closed the half by slashing through the defense and hitting a fall away jump shot, giving LBC a 55-42 lead at the break.
Â
LBC continued to use excellent ball movement in the second half, with Sareyka throwing an incredible behind the back pass to Stoltzfus for the easy basket. Cabrini would answer, scoring four straight points before Hilton knocked down another 3-pointer, putting the Chargers ahead 62-48. After a huge block in transition by
Caleb Carpenter, Shewbridge knifed through Cavaliers' defense for a layup. Cabrini battled back, closing within eight points before
Isaiah Mitchell drove to the basket for a layup. Off a steal, Sareyka drilled a deep 3-pointer to take a 74-61 lead with 11:34 remaining in the game. Moments later, Sareyka picked off a pass and sprinted to the other end for an easy layup. Shewbridge then beat the shot clock buzzer, knocking down a 3-pointer to put LBC ahead by 18 points. Hilton then added his third 3-pointer of the game, putting LBC ahead by 19 points. The teams would trade points for the next several minutes with a Sareyka transition layup putting LBC ahead 95-78 with 4:17 remaining in the game. Coaching Points
"Today we played with great effort and execution which resulted in us competing at a high level," said head coach
Jon Mack. "We struggled in those two areas in our last two games this week against high-level competition. I was proud of our effort on both ends of the floor. I thought we played our most efficient and selfless basketball so far this season. We had some great individual performances and contributions which turned into a great collective performance. On the defensive end, I thought we got better despite giving up 90 points. We did a great job guarding the paint and holding them to 30 points in the paint despite Cabrini making 14 threes. This was a tough week for us on the road. The Robert Morris and Neumann road losses forced us to refocus on our WHY (our mission) and program vision. Our response today was pivotal to our Uncommon Culture. I want to congratulate
Jordan Shewbridge and Christian Lane from Cabrini on an outstanding shooting/scoring display. They were special today!"
