Chargers Win Conference Opener

How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball took down United East foe SUNY Morrisville in the team's conference opener, winning by a score of 67-45 on Friday, December 3.
 
The Chargers (3-4 Overall, 1-0 United East) got off to a fast start grabbing an early lead when Emma Drouillard drilled a 3-pointer. The Chargers used their athleticism to get out in transition with Drouillard scoring back-to-back baskets, giving LBC a 9-2 lead. SUNY Morrisville (4-3 Overall, 0-1 United East) hit a 3-pointer to pull back within four points. Alaysha Iwais had an answer, knocking down a 3-pointer of her own, to make the score 12-5. Later in the quarter, Adalyn Steiner hit a 3-pointer to keep the seven-point advantage. Steiner then drove to the basket for a layup, putting LBC ahead 17-8. Tenia Brown hit a layup putting the Chargers ahead by 11 points.
 
In the second quarter, Iwais continued her hot start scoring a layup to make the score 25-16. Jade Eshelman drove to the basket, finishing a contested layup and drawing a foul. Eshleman completed the three-point play, giving LBC a 12-point advantage. Drouillard and Iwais hit layups as the Chargers went on an 11-point run. Eshelman completed an old fashion three-point play to close the quarter, giving LBC a 39-21 lead at the half.
 
LBC continued their offensive rhythm in the second half, with Brown hitting back-to-back layups to help maintain a 17-point advantage. Midway through the third quarter, SUNY Morrisville went on 10-0 run powered by Brooke Hammersley who led the Mustangs in scoring with 17 points. Steiner ended the run, hitting a 3-pointer to swing momentum back to the Chargers. Iwais closed the quarter by swishing a 3-pointer to give LBC a 53-39 lead heading to the final frame. Iwais led the Chargers in scoring with 16 points.
 
The Chargers continued to hold the lead with a jump shot by Lizzy Tilton putting LBC ahead by 16 points with 5:47 remaining in the game. Tilton and Iwais continued to attack the paint, hitting layups to go ahead by 20 points late in the quarter. LBC rolled to the 67-45 victory.
 
Inside The Numbers
- The Chargers were led by Alaysha Iwais who scored 16 points, dished seven assists, and pulled in seven rebounds
- Emma Drouillard reached double figures, scoring 11 points
- Jade Eshelman battled in the paint, scoring 10 points, and pulling in seven rebounds
- Tenia Brown totaled 10 points, going 5-5 from the field
- Lizzy Tilton filled the stat sheet, scoring eight points, distributing six assists, and gathering up five rebounds
- SUNY Morrisville was led by Brooke Hammersley, who scored 17 points
- The Chargers won the rebounding battle, holding a 39-23 advantage
- LBC recorded 23 assists on 29 made baskets
 
Coaching Points
"For our first conference game, I couldn't be more proud of our defensive intensity, strength on the boards and overall ball movement," said head coach Joy Tharrington. "We were locked in on scouting report and bounced back in a big way from a tough loss against Neumann. Morrisville is a gritty, well coached team that required us to be on point offensively and defensively for four quarters."
