The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team dropped a road contest on Friday afternoon, as Southern Virginia defeated the Chargers, 3-0 in Buena Vista, Va. The Knights won, 27-25, 25-21, 25-17 and improved to 2-0 this season, while the Chargers dropped to 2-3.
 
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the opening set thanks to a kill and ace from senior Kyran Flahive. The Knights answered back and tied the set at 9-9, and the teams exchanged points to 15-15. A key block highlighted a three-point scoring run for the Chargers, and they took an 18-15 lead that led to a Southern Virginia timeout. Lancaster Bible kept rolling following the timeout, and took a 23-18 lead, but five straight points from the Knights tied the set at 23-23. The Chargers fought off two set points, but couldn't do it a third time, and dropped the opener, 27-25.
 
The teams traded points to open the second set, and a solo block from Lancaster Bible's Hunter Davis helped tie the score at 8-8. The two squads once again exchanged points to 13-13, but errors plagued the Chargers midway through the frame, and they trailed 17-14 after two straight miscues. Southern Virginia eventually led 20-16 which led to a Lancaster Bible timeout, but unlike the Knights in the first set, the Chargers couldn't muster a comeback and lost the set, 25-21.
 
Southern Virginia took an early 3-0 lead in the third set, and eventually built a 15-11 lead. Lancaster Bible responded with three straight points, as Elijah Herb had a kill, followed by a block assist from Kole Horst and Caleb Roberts, and a Knights error. That would be as close as the Chargers would get however, as Southern Virginia won seven of the next eight points for a 22-15 lead, and later won, 25-17.
 
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible had 30 kills and 14 errors on 82 attempts for a .195 hitting percentage, while the Knights had 41 kills and seven errors on 85 attempts for a .400 attack percentage…Southern Virginia held a 34-30 edge in digs, while each team had four blocks…Flahive had 11 kills and two aces to lead the Chargers, while Horst had eight kills and four digs…Herb added six kills and six digs, and Tanner Shertzer had a team-high 10 digs…Reuben Kemrer added 28 assists.
 
News & Notes: Lancaster Bible is now 1-1 all-time against Southern Virginia…The only other time these teams played was Jan. 20, 2018 when the Chargers defeated the Knights, 3-2 as part of the Jim Coleman Invitational in Springfield, Ohio…Flahive now has two straight matches with 11 kills, which ties his career high.
