Chargers Post Second Straight Win

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team has its first winning streak of the condensed 2021 season, as the Chargers defeated Bryn Athyn, 65-42 on Saturday evening in Bryn Athyn, Pa. Lancaster Bible is now 3-4 this season, while the Lions fell to 0-2.
 
How it Happened: Bryn Athyn jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Saturday night, and led 11-6 more than midway through the opening quarter. Lancaster Bible answered, and used a 13-2 run, including six straight points from Paige Towne, to take a 19-13 lead.
 
The Chargers eventually led 21-16 after 10 minutes of play, and built a 24-16 advantage 36 seconds into the second quarter after a 3-pointer from Hope Hodges. The teams exchanged baskets for much of the second frame, but Faith Hammond's 3-pointer with 1:41 to play stretched the Chargers' lead to 12, 34-22. Lancaster Bible scored on its final three possessions as well, including four points from Towne, and led 40-24 at halftime.
 
Lancaster Bible's defense clamped down in the third quarter and did not allow a field goal from the Lions, and only two points total. Jenna Dombach scored eight points during the quarter, and the Chargers led, 53-26 after 30 minutes of play. Lancaster Bible maintained its lead through the fourth quarter, and earned its first win streak of the season.
 
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the field, including 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from 3-point range…Lancaster Bible was also 14-of-17 from the free throw line…Bryn Athyn shot 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the floor, including 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from 3-point range….Bryn Athyn was just 6-of-19 from the free throw line…Lancaster Bible held a 43-31 edge in rebounds…Towne posted a career-best 19 points, and also had seen rebounds and three assists…Dombach had 18 points, seven rebounds, and four steals…Hope Hodges had seven points, while Lizzy Tilton added six points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals…Alisha McKnight had eight points to lead the Lions.
 
The Coach Says: "I was proud of our free throw shooting tonight," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Joy Tharrington said. "We finally met and exceeded our standard of play that we set for ourselves each game. We did a much better job on the offensive boards, and cut Bryn Athyn's number from 24 to 12."
 
On the team's play on Saturday: "I challenged the girls to play not to the scoreboard, but to our standard of play, and I think they did that," Tharrington said. "Paige was phenomenal, and provided a low post threat that gave us easy scores, and took some pressure off our guards."
 
News & Notes: The Chargers are now 9-1 all-time against Bryn Athyn…Lancaster Bible is 2-1 in road contests this season…Saturday marked the first time all season the Chargers have shot 40 percent or better in back-to-back games…Lancaster Bible's 82.4 percent (14-of-17) mark from the free throw line was a season-high…The Chargers also had a season-high 18 assists on Saturday.
