How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team opened its 2022 season by rallying to defeat Erskine College by a score of 3-2 on Saturday, January 8.Â
The Chargers (1-0 Overall) got off to a slow start in the opening set, falling in an early 6-2 hole.
Caleb Roberts jump started the offense slamming down a kill. The Chargers closed back within three-points before Erskine College (0-1 Overall) went on a 5-2 run to take control of the set. Trailing by eight,
Dawson Forney picked up a kill, starting a 5-1 run by LBC, allowing the Chargers to cut the deficit back down to four. The Fleet responded by running off five straight to regain momentum and cruised to the 25-19 victory in the opening set.
LBC began to find its rhythm early in the second set. After a Fleet service error,
Hunter Davis and Forney combined for a block.
Kole Horst followed with a service ace, helping the Chargers rip off six straight points and take an 8-4 lead. Erskine answered back, tying the set at nine. The teams traded points with LBC continuing to hold the advantage. Horst registered a kill as the Chargers scored three consecutive points to take a 16-12 lead. Horst led the Chargers offense with 18 kills. Later in the set, LBC used back-to-back kills by Forney and Davis to take a commanding 20-14 lead. Erskine made one final push, pulling back within two late in the set, but Horst slammed the door shut with a thunderous kill to give LBC a 25-22 victory in the second set.
After dropping the third set 26-24, the Chargers' backs were against the wall going into the fourth set. Back-to-back service aces by
Hunter Davis allowed LBC to take a 5-4 lead early in the set. The Chargers began to take control later in the set when a Horst kill sparked a 5-1 run, allowing LBC to take a 13-10 lead. The Chargers held that lead until late in the set when the Fleet tied the score at 22.
LBC would win three of the final four points with Roberts sending the match to a fifth set with a kill.
In the fifth and final set, LBC jumped out to a 4-2 advantage thanks to a run capped off by a kill from
Elijah Herb. The set remained close until two more kills by Horst allowed LBC to go on a 4-0 run and take a commanding 12-7 lead. Erskine tried to close the gap, but Herb capped off the rally with another kill, giving LBC a 15-11 victory in the set cliniching the match.
