How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team returned to United East play, defeating Penn St. Berks by a score of 98-60 on January 15, 2022.
LBC got on the board first with layups by
Grant Sareyka and
Adam Stoltzfus. Stoltzfus led all players in scoring with 23 points in the game. Five minutes into the game, Berks pulled within four points, making the game 12-8. The Chargers (7-5, 3-0 United East) responded with a 7-0 run sparked by a
Jordan Shewbridge 3-pointer and another 3-pointer by
Jackson Whitt off the bench. LBC had a 16-point lead at the 10-minute mark of the first half, which then was extended to 19 after layups by
Maureon Tisdale-Couch and Sareyka, making the score 36-17. The Lions (0-11, 0-5 United East) tried to get back in the game, going on an 11-3 run over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to 11. The Chargers held a double-digit lead for the rest of the half, going into halftime with a 47-37 lead.
The Chargers began the second half by capitalizing off Berks' turnovers with
Seth Beers and
Tyler Hilton finishing layups. A continued trend of messy play by the Lions launched LBC on a thunderous 19-0 run to open the second half, making the score 66-37 with 15 minutes remaining. Stoltzfus and Beers highlighted the second half box score for the Chargers, each scoring 13 points for LBC. Berks couldn't do much about Lancaster Bible's clicking offense, continuing to trail by 30+ points for the remainder of the game. The Chargers went deep into their bench in the final minutes of the game, with every available player getting minutes on the floor. The Chargers closed out the game, with LBC rolling to a 98-60 victory.

Coaching Points
"It's good to be back! The season has presented a lot of challenges for us, but we are grateful for the character lessons they have provided for our team!," said head coach
Jon Mack. "Our guys were excited to compete today after being off from practice and competition for over a week. I thought in the first half our fatigue was an issue. We were a step slow in our defensive rotations and we took several fatigue shots offensively that led to run outs for Berks."
"In the second half, we found our defensive rhythm and played at our pace. I thought the turning point was opening up the second half with 6 consecutive stops and scoring 17 straight points. Offensively, I was proud of our 26 assists. We have made some huge strides in this area over the past few games. Our turnovers were a little higher than normal which allowed Berks to remain in striking distance in the first half. This is an area we have to continue to improve in as we dive into the heart of conference play. It was also great to see
Seth Beers take off today. His impact on both ends was huge for us!"
