How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team kept rolling, winning their ninth consecutive game by defeating St. Mary's College of Maryland by a score of 84-58 on Saturday, February 12.
Â
The Chargers (17-6 Overall, 13-1 United East) grabbed an early lead when
Tyler Hilton drilled a corner 3-pointer.
Grant Sareyka raced out in transition, scoring a layup to give LBC a 5-2 lead. Hilton followed with a transition layup off a steal by
Seth Beers capping off a 7-0 run. St. Mary's (11-9 Overall, 10-4 United East) halted the run temporarily, but
Jordan Shewbridge started another push, hitting a 3-pointer in transition to take a 10-4 lead.
Adam Stoltzfus finished back-to-back layups, giving the Chargers a 14-4 lead. LBC kept pushing the advantage, continuing on a 19-1 run to seize control of the game. Shewbridge connected on a pair of 3-pointers during the run, as he would score a game-high 23 points. Sareyka halted a 4-0 run by the Seahawks, swishing a 3-pointer in transition. After Hilton made four free throws, Stoltzfus powered in a layup to make the score 39-13.
Andrew Zentner maintained the 26-point advantage putting back an offensive rebound. St. Mary's closed the half on a 7-2 run, but the Chargers led 51-30 at the break.
Â
The Seahawks made a push early in the second half, closing within 15 points. Beers and Shewbridge helped the Chargers recapture the momentum by knifing to the basket for layups. Stoltzfus then completed a three-point play to give LBC a 60-38 advantage. St. Mary's again made a push, trying to close within striking distance, using a 6-0 run to pull within 15 points with 12:57 remaining.
Ethan Beachy halted the run scoring a layup that was set up by a great pass from Stoltzfus. Later in the half, Shewbridge scored five straight points to put the Chargers ahead 73-53. Stoltzfus and Beachy scored back-to-back layups, stretching the lead to 25 points. LBC maintained the large advantage, picking up an 84-58 victory.

Coaching Points
"Tonight was a big win for us! I thought our defensive pressure and rebounding were really good which allowed us to jump out with a lead in the first 12 minutes of the game," said head coach
Jon Mack. "The last 8 minutes we took a step down on the boards and allowed them second chance points and opportunities on the free throw line. St. Mary's is a really good rebounding team, and you can't take a possession off on the glass. In the second half, I thought we continued to struggle keeping them off the glass and we had a segment of turnovers that they were converting. Â After a refocusing timeout we got back to getting stops and converting with better poise. We look forward to getting better next week and finishing the regular season strong."
