How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to #7 Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday, February 15.
The Chargers (10-5 Overall) began the first set strong with
Kole Horst firing a kill and
Tanner Shertzer landing a service ace. After the Scarlet Raiders (9-1 Overall) tied the game at eight, Horst slammed down another kill to give LBC back the lead. Rutgers-Newark found their groove, going on an 9-2 run to gain a six-point lead. Kills by
Dawson Forney and
Elijah Herb helped the Chargers pull back within four points. LBC could not pull back in front, dropping the first set 25-19.
The teams traded points early in the second set, with Rutgers-Newark holding a slim 6-5 lead. They then launched another 4-0 run to go up by five points. The teams again began to trade points with Forney and
Caleb Roberts getting kills. Another Shertzer service ace highlighted a 5-1 run by the Chargers to narrow the deficit to five points. They could not climb all the way back, with the Scarlet Knights finishing the set 25-19.
After falling behind early,
Hunter Davis got up for a block to help the Chargers pull within one. A 7-2 run from Rutgers-Newark propelled them to a 12-6 lead until Horst and Davis combined for another block to cut the lead to five. A pair of kills by Forney highlighted a 5-2 run from the Chargers to cut the deficit to just two points. The teams proceeded to trade points for several volleys, working to a tie at twenty points late in the set. The final push from Lancaster Bible was not enough as the Scarlet Raiders closed on a 5-1 run to win the set 25-21 and secure the 3-0 match victory.
