How it Happened
The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team defeated Alvernia University in a five-set thriller on Wednesday, March 23.
The Chargers (14-7 Overall) traded points through the early portion of the first set trailing 11-10 midway through. Alvernia (11-9 Overall) went on a 4-0 run to surge ahead in the set. The Chargers tried to battle back, but the Golden Wolves used a 5-1 run late in the set, powering to a 25-16 victory.
The Chargers raced ahead in the second set, using kills from
Dawson Forney and
Caleb Roberts to jump out to an 8-6 lead.
Kole Horst sparked a 4-1 run by slamming down a kill, extending the Chargers lead to four. LBC remained in control, trading the final six points with the Chargers capitalizing on a pair of service errors to win the second set.
Alvernia used a pair of early runs to grab control and win the third set. With their backs against the wall, LBC fought back in the fourth set, using a 4-1 run to take an 11-10 lead. The Golden Wolves continued to battle back eventually grabbing a 22-20 lead late in the set. LBC rallied back, winning five of the last six points with
Elijah Herb and
Caleb Roberts blocking an attack to secure the 25-23 set victory and force a fifth set.
LBC jumped ahead in the fifth set, using a service ace from Horst to take a 3-1 lead. Alvernia surged back in front by one point. Herb tied the set at nine, slamming down a kill. LBC then used kills by
Hunter Davis and Horst to take a 13-10 lead in the set. Davis and Herb fired the final two kills, giving LBC a 15-13 victory in the final set.
