Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Hunter Gerber

Chargers Handle Highlanders

The Lancaster Bible men's soccer team traveled to Langhorne, Pa. to compete against longtime rivals Cairn University on Monday night. A game that was originally scheduled for September 12th but had to be rescheduled due to weather and a matchup which the Highlanders has predominantly won, but in recent years the Chargers have won the past two contests. The Chargers continued the win streak with a convincing 3-2 final over the Highlanders.

How It Happened: In a highly anticipated match, the Chargers wouldn't waste any time before going on attack. The first five minutes of the match would see two corner kicks from the Chargers and two shots from both Andrew Cox and Kedric Yoder. Not much farther into the game, senior forward Clark Shreiner would get past a defender on the opposing endline and send a ball towards a diving Sam Glock who'd sneak it into the right side of the goal putting the Chargers up 1-0 just 7:47 into the game.

Cairn would respond with a goal of their own just four minutes later on a nice move and finish of their own, equalizing the game at 1-1 all just 11 minutes into the contest. The Chargers wouldn't back down though as they sent six shots and three corner kicks into the goalie box in the following six minutes of the game. It wasn't until veteran Kedric Yoder would find the ball at his feet with one defender in front of him on the left side of the box after a series of solid passing from the Chargers. Yoder would go on to juke the defender and place a shot on goal which would ricochet off the goalie's hands straight into a streaking Clark Shreiner who'd put the ball right into the open net, giving the Chargers a 2-1 advantage. The remainder of the first half would be a defensive battle as both squads sent several attacks but everything coming up short.

The second half would start off much slower than the first half until about the 68th minute when the Chargers would turn up the offensive pressure. Looking for a breakdown in the Highlander defense, Yoder would again find the ball at his feet on the left side of the box, but this time would dribble through a series of defenders to send a through ball perfectly ahead of Glock, who'd sprint through the defense and send it into the left side of the net. The beautiful connection between Yoder and Glock would place the Chargers up by two goals with a score of 3-1 at the 75th minute.

Cairn wouldn't let the game finish without making it interesting as they scored with just eight minutes to go. The Chargers, still sitting with a one goal advantage, would do everything they could to neutralize the Highlanders' attacks. Senior goalkeeper Isaac Barrow would help keep the Highlanders at bay with a series of critical saves as Cairn sent several desperate shot attempts. The clock would hit 90 minutes and the Chargers would come out with 3-2 win, marking their fifth win of the season.

From the Coach: "Today was a fun, end-to-end game. We controlled the first half and they took the second. Some huge moments from individual players and a great team response today. Barrow preserved the win with some unbelievable saves down the stretch. Great match against a very good team." – Head Coach Tommy Ardt

By the Numbers:
  • Sam Glock would finish with a game high two goals for the game, making that five goals on the year.
  • Kedric Yoder would add two assists putting him at four assists on the year.
  • Clark Shreiner would mark a goal and an assist tonight.
  • The Chargers would outshoot the Highlanders 23-15 with 13 of their shots on target… Barrow would add eight saves and the Chargers' attack would gain seven corner kicks.

Information to Know: This would mark just the fifth win over Cairn University for the Chargers ever since the first competition dating back to 2000, but the Chargers are now on a three game win streak against the Highlanders.

Up Next: The Chargers will return home to take on the Goucher Gophers under the lights of Donald H. Funk Field on Wednesday, September 28th at 7 p.m.
