After suffering a heartbreaker in the 90
th minute against a tough Grove City team, the Lancaster Bible men's soccer team traveled to Reading, Pa. to take on the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University. A matchup which they had dropped 2-1 last year, the Chargers would ensure that would not be the case, ending the game with a comfy 3-1 lead. The win pushes the Chargers over the .500 mark to 2-1 and Alvernia to a 1-1-1 record.
How It Happened: Coach Ardt had said it would be a battle, and a battle it was. The Golden Wolves would continue to push the pace with the Chargers keeping right alongside of them. It would seem Alvernia was starting to pick-up momentum, that was until freshman
Ben Nolt would send a ball right into the back of the net just before the 32
nd minute. Halting Alvernia in its tracks and moving the momentum to the Chargers' sideline, the Chargers would head into halftime re-energized and ready to go.
Nolt's goal would not only put the Chargers up by one headed into halftime, but it would create a domino effect as Lancaster Bible would go on to score two more goals immediately following the start of the second half.
Owen Nell would be the first to strike at the 46:08 mark on an assist from
Clark Shreiner, and Shreiner added one of his own on a penalty kick. The scoring outburst would place the Chargers lead to 3-0 just three minutes into the second half.
Sitting with a comfortable lead, the Chargers would continue to attack, but not at the cost of their defense. Alvernia would manage to score one in the 62
nd minute, but that would be the only piece of the net the Golden Wolves would see.
From the Coach: "Today's battle was a great test against a very athletic and good team. I'm proud of our consistent challenges in the air and that we finished the game once we got up and they committed numbers forward. A lot to work on and we'll learn from this as we keep going." –
Head Coach Tommy Ardt
