The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team completed a perfect two days on Saturday, as the Chargers defeated Wells, 72-62 at Horst Athletic Center to earn a sweep of back-to-back United East Conference contests. The victory propels the Chargers to 9-7 overall this season and 6-1 in United East Conference play, while the Express dropped to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in conference action.
Â
In addition to the victory, graduate student
Jordan Shewbridge became the program's all-time leading scorer with a pair of free throws late in the second half. Shewbridge's 1,980
th career point broke the previous record of 1,979 held by Sam Rempel ('01). With his 22 points on Saturday, Shewbridge now has 1,982 career points.
Â
How It Happened: After Wells opened the scoring 32 seconds into the contest, Lancaster Bible used a 9-0 run over the next 5:47 to open a seven-point advantage. Shewbridge had five points during the run, while junior
Seth Beers and junior
Andrew Zentner had two points apiece. Wells closed the gap to 12-10 three minutes later on a basket from Ty McBride, but a dunk from Zentner the next time down the floor for the Chargers restored their four-point advantage.
Â
Wells controlled play for the next five minutes and eventually took a 23-21 lead on a 3-pointer from Terrance Clayton-Murphy with 4:58 remaining in the half. Lancaster Bible answered right back and used an 8-0 run led by
Grant Sareyka to build a 29-23 lead with 2:56 left in the half.
Â
Sareyka and McBride traded 3-pointers late in the half, and the Chargers led by five at the break.
Â
The teams traded baskets for the first four minutes, including Sareyka and Wells' Billy McCrae who exchanged 3-pointers. In a game that both teams needed, the second half was both intense and chippy, as both teams picked up technical fouls. Lancaster Bible regained control of the game and after two free throws from Shewbridge, had a great passing play that ended with
Adam Stoltzfus finishing with a layup to give the Chargers a 46-38 lead.
Â
After Wells cut the deficit to 49-43, Stoltzfus drained a 3-pointer in front of the Lancaster Bible student section with the shot clock winding down to give Lancaster Bible a 52-43 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
Â
Lancaster Bible continued to take control of the game later in the half, and Shewbridge's record-breaking free throws drew a standing ovation with 6:16 remaining. Wells kept things interesting down the stretch, but the Chargers held on to complete their perfect weekend.
