The Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team lost its third straight contest on Wednesday night, as the Chargers lost to cross-county foe Elizabethtown, 96-86 in Elizabethtown, Pa. The loss drops the Chargers to 4-6 overall this season, while the Blue Jays improved to 7-4.Â
How it Happened: The teams traded baskets over the first four minutes of the contest, as a layup from
Jordan Shewbridge knotted the game at 8-8 just under four minutes into the contest. An 8-0 run by the Blue Jays followed over the next 1:25, but Lancaster Bible answered right back and went on a 13-1 run over the next five minutes to take a 21-17 advantage.
Lancaster Bible continued to build its lead later in the half, as a 3-pointer from Shewbridge and a layup from
Andrew Zentner gave the Chargers a 39-27 lead with 3:05 remaining in the frame. After Elizabethtown cut the Chargers' advantage to nine with just over two minutes remaining,
Grant Sareyka and
Adam Stoltzfus ended the half with baskets for Lancaster Bible and gave the visitors a 46-32 edge at the break.
The second half was the complete opposite from the first, as Elizabethtown erased the Chargers' 14-point lead in less than four minutes after back-to-back free throws from Rance Russo knotted the score at 48-48. The teams went back-and-forth over the next several minutes, but Lancaster Bible finally gained back the upper hand with a 7-0 run midway through the half to take a 70-65 lead.
Malachi McDowell, Shewbridge, and
Isaiah Mitchell had baskets during the run, but the Blue Jays answered with a 6-0 run of their own and grabbed a 71-70 lead with 9:20 to play.
Zentner restored Lancaster Bible's lead at 72-71 with 9:03 remaining, but over the next 4:15 Elizabethtown used an 11-1 run to break the game open. The Chargers clawed back the rest of the way and got to within 89-86 with 1:11 to play after a 3-pointer from Grant Sarekya, but couldn't get any closer and the Blue Jays converted their free throws down the stretch to earn the 10-point win.
