Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ben James

Chargers Bested by Top-Ranked Messiah

The Lancaster Bible College Men's Soccer team suffered a 4-1 loss against the number one nationally ranked Messiah. The Chargers now fall to a record of 5-7-2 on the year remaining 2-1 in the United East, and on the other side, the Falcons go to 12-0-1 overall this season.

How It Happened: The game started out with both sides battling back and forth, neither side allowing a shot to reach the keeper. In the 19th minute, Messiah scored their first goal of the game to break the stalemate. Reigning United East Offensive Player of the Week, Andrew Cox, answered back with a nice shot on net, but the Falcons' keeper came away with a save. In the 26th minute, Messiah scored another goal from a corner kick to extend their lead. Lucas Durkin had a late opportunity from a corner kick just before the half, but it was unsuccessful as the Chargers went into halftime down 2-0.

The Falcons came out firing in the second half getting four shots off early, but the Chargers' defense held their own not allowing any to go in. However, in the 64th minute, Messiah scored their third goal with Lancaster Bible yet to score so far, but with just over six minutes remaining, Dan Marcroft battled for the ball in the opposing side's box and passed a low ball through the defense to get the Chargers on the scoreboard. Just two minutes later, the Falcons scored right back from a penalty kick. In the end, Lancaster Bible could not complete the comeback, and Messiah defeated the team 4-1.

By the Numbers:
-Dan Marcroft scored the Chargers' only goal tonight on his only shot of the night
-Andrew Cox added a shot on goal of his own
-Goalkeeper Richie Lockard finished the game with four saves
-Matt McDonald led Messiah with two goals on three shots

Information to Know: This was the first time in program history that Lancaster Bible has faced off against Messiah. It was a career night for Freshman Dan Marcroft as he was able to score his first collegiate goal with the team's lone goal. He also got his first career shot on goal with a perfect shot-on-goal percentage against Messiah.

Up Next: The Chargers are set to return to their home turf to play a crucial conference match against Penn St. Berks on Saturday, October 14 at 1:00 p.m.
