The Lancaster Bible College Field Hockey team traveled to Stevenson on Thursday night to compete against the Mustangs on their Pink Night. Coming off a two-game win streak the weekend before, the Chargers held tough versus the Mustangs, but ultimately fell 3-0. The Chargers fall to 4-9 overall while the Mustangs improve to 8-6 on the year.
Â
How It Happened: The Chargers knew they were in for a tough fight against a very disciplined Mustangs squad, but despite the adversity the Chargers competed toe-to-toe for much of the game. The defense showed up big in the first period either block or saving any opportunity the Mustangs had while the offense was able to get a penalty corner of their own.
Â
Looking to keep the Mustangs scoreless before halftime, the Chargers defense held strong for another 12 minutes or so before the Mustangs were able to sneak a goal in with just under three minutes before half. Chargers' goalkeeper
Amanda Hoover tallied two of her six saves for the game in the second period while the defense managed to deter everything thrown their way.
Â
The Mustangs kept the offensive pressure on, opening the second half notching their second goal of the game six minutes in. With a 2-0 lead, the Mustangs added another at the 38-minute mark to give them a 3-0 advantage. The Chargers defense tightened up, not giving up another shot in the period. The fourth period turned out to be scoreless as neither team were able to get on the board, ending the game with the Mustangs winning 3-0.
Â
From the Coach: "We are extremely proud of our effort and tenacity tonight. Our defensive unit took a beating but was steady, strong, and frustrated them. We were connecting well and generated attack against a team that we barely got over the 50 in the past. This was a great test heading into conference play next week." –
Head Coach Becky Elliott
Â
By the Numbers: The Chargers were outshot 20-0… Hoover tallied six total saves… the Chargers had one corner to the Mustangs' 14… Gladstein, Rankin, and Ziegler had the goals for the Mustangs.
Â
Information to Know: Despite being 0-3 all-time to the Mustangs, the Chargers gave up only three goals compared to the 16 goals given up in the prior two contests… Hoover now has 77 saves on the year.
Â
Up Next: The Chargers open United East Conference play next week on Wednesday, October 18 at the Donald H. Funk Field against the Wilson Phoenix at 7:00 p.m.
