The Lancaster Bible Women's Basketball team kicked off their season with a convincing 90-38 road win against Valley Forge. The Chargers start their season off 1-0 after beating the non-conference opponent, and the Patriots start their season at 0-1.
How It Happened: The Chargers started the first quarter a little slow in the first few possessions, but after that, it didn't take senior
Jenna Dombach very long to start this season rolling as she put together a personal run of 11 straight points, including a perfect three for three beyond the arc. Newcomer
Raven Hunter added six points of her own later in the quarter to bring the team to a 23-4 lead. Dombach added one more three just before the end of the quarter, and the Chargers led 26-9 at the end of the first. Lancaster Bible's stifling defense kept things going in the second quarter with Hunter getting a steal leading to a layup on the other end in the first 20 seconds of the period.
Rachel Nolt started to catch fire as well as she nailed a three and finished an and-one two possessions later to give the Chargers a 36-9 lead. Later in the quarter, Dombach hit another three, which fittingly put the team up by the same number on her jersey, 35. Entering halftime, Lancaster Bible remained on top 49-17.
The first four minutes of the second half were heavily defensive-focused for both sides as over half of the points were earned at the free-throw line. In another defensive stretch, Dombach scored the only seven points for either side in the following four minutes to bring a 63-23 Chargers lead. Following buckets from Hunter and Nolt to close out the third quarter, Lancaster Bible led 67-26. Senior
Alaysha Iwais came out on fire in the fourth quarter, scoring nine points in the first four minutes of the period. Hunter also had an outstanding quarter, scoring seven straight for Lancaster Bible including a fast break and-one following a steal. In the end, the Chargers were too much for the Patriots, winning 90-38.
From the Coach: "Great win to kick off the season! We wanted to focus on three things going into the game: 1. Rebounding battle (won 36-27) 2. Turnovers (only 8 and forced 27) 3. Hunt we shots over me shots (26 assists on 36 made shots). Couldn't be more proud of our girls and how much resolve they showed the play that well given our circumstances of only having 6 players (one of whom has only been with us for a week). Also a really cool moment for me individually to start my head coaching career with a win on the same floor that I finished my playing career with a loss on. Excited for two more games this weekend!" -
Head Coach Ryan Carpenter
