Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Hunter Gerber

Another Five-Set Thriller, Another Win

The Lancaster Bible College men's volleyball team continues to keep it rolling winning, their fourth straight game over the Stevenson Mustangs 3-2. The Chargers have managed to win three five set games in a row starting with Stevenson at home on February 1st, Randolph-Macon February 11th, and now Stevenson once again Wednesday night. The Chargers improve to a solid 7-3 overall record while the Mustangs drop to 4-7 overall.

How It Happened: It was the Mustangs who found the win column early, taking the first set 25-19. The Mustangs took an early 4-1 lead and continued to hold the lead until a string of attacks, capped off by a service ace from Michael Myers, gave the Chargers a late 17-16 lead. The Mustangs battled back and went on a 8-1 run to end the game.

The Chargers responded quickly in the second set, running to a 7-2 lead. Keeping the same energy, the Chargers extended the lead to 15-8. Every time the Mustangs found a point, the Chargers responded with one or two of their own, eventually winning the second set 25-19 and tying the match at 1-1.

The third set was a battle early with both teams trading point after point. The Mustangs took a 13-9 lead and held onto the point difference through the end of the third set, winning 25-20. Like the first two sets, the Chargers knew they needed to respond to hang on and they did just that, jumping to a 18-12 lead off back-to-back kills from Hunter Davis and a service ace from Ben Latham. The Chargers capitalized with a fourth set win, ending on a kill from Elijah Herb then a kill from Christian Herr to close it 25-18.

All tied up, the Chargers knew they've been in this position and began the set on a mission, scoring four unanswered points highlighted by two kills from Dawson Forney. Using their momentum, the Chargers found themselves with a convincing 13-7, lead but the Mustangs had one last effort in them. The Mustangs proceeded to go on a 5-0 run to make things 13-12 and a ballgame. The Mustangs actually tied the game at 14-14 before Forney stepped up with another kill and then an attack error off a Chargers attack gave the Chargers a 16-14 decision and another point for the win column.

By the Numbers: The Chargers edged out the Mustangs in kills 55-48, service aces 10-3, and blocks 11-5… Herb led the Chargers with 13 kills and had three blocks… Forney had 12 kills and 10 digs… Jake Rotelle had 11 kills, four aces, and 11 digs… Michael Myers had four aces… Kevin Koch and Herr had five blocks each… Herr dished out 44 assists… Thenell for the Mustangs led the game with 19 kills.

Up Next: The Chargers head out to Berea, Ohio this weekend to compete against Baldwin Wallace and Geneva (Pa.) on Saturday, February 18th at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
