The Lancaster Bible College women's lacrosse team won a 15-13 offensive shootout with the Gators of Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday afternoon. Following the win, the Chargers improve to 2-2 overall while the Gators drop to 0-4 overall.
How It Happened: The Chargers managed to create a sizable lead in the first half of Saturday's contest, leading 11-6 at halftime. It began with junior
Katelynn Perrotta finding her teammate, sophomore
Lindsey Weaver, for the first goal of the game. The Gators responded with a goal of their own to tie the game, a theme seen through much of the game. Weaver found the net again not but twenty seconds later off an assist from
Abby Donaldson to make it a 2-1 Charger lead. The Chargers went on to score three more unanswered goals including two of her game-high six goals from Perrotta and a goal from freshman
Kassandra Horning. The Gators managed to put two more goals on the board at the end of the period to make it a 5-3 ball game.
The second period was all Chargers after a Gator goal brought the game within one. Perrotta went ahead and worked her magic, scoring three goals in a row, and Horning topped it off with her second goal of the game to give the Chargers a five-goal lead, 9-4. Donaldson added a goal of her own and the Gators scored two more at the end of the half.
The Gators opened the second half with a goal, only to be answered by Perrotta and Weaver, making it 13-7. The third period ended 13-9 in favor of the Chargers. The fourth and final period of the game was where things got interesting. The Gators again opened the period with a goal to bring the deficit within three. Two more unanswered Gator goals brought the deficit within one goal, the closest it's been since the beginning of the game. When things got tight, senior
Kym Kouterick stepped up. Perrotta found an open Kouterick at the 8:43 mark to give the Chargers a two-point cushion, but the Gators were relentless on both ends of the field, scoring another goal to bring it to one goal again with a little over five minutes to play. The game went back and forth as the Gators looked for a break and the Chargers were looking to hold on. Kouterick once again found the back of the net off another great assist from teammate Perrotta, giving the Chargers another cushion and eventually the Chargers' second win of the season.
By the Numbers: The Chargers edged out the Gators 35-34 in shots and 27-25 in shots on goal… both the Chargers and the Gators had 12 saves… the Gators had 10 turnovers and the Chargers had eight… Perrotta had a game-high six goals and three assists with three ground balls… Weaver had four goals… Kouterick and Horning added two goals each and Donaldson added a goal of her own… Stewart and Generoso had five goals apiece for the Gators.
