Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Hunter Gerber

Chargers Drop Tough Bid to Spartans

The Lancaster Bible College Men's Soccer team squared off against the Spartans of York (Pa.) on Saturday, September 16 under the lights of Donald H. Funk Field at the Willis & Martha Herr Stadium. The Chargers couldn't overcome the Spartans losing 6-0. The Chargers fall to 2-2-2 overall while the Spartans improve to 2-1-2 overall.

How It Happened: It was the Spartans from the start as the visiting team scored their first goal of the game just 2:52 into the game. A Spartan cross found the shoulder of another Spartan attacker on the left side of the box to place it in the back of the net.

The Chargers kept looking for a gap in the Spartans defense but came up unsuccessful in the first half. However, the Spartans managed to get two more before the first half concluded as #9 Jack Mitzelfelt scored at the 26-minute and 30-minute mark to make it 3-0 at the half.

Coming out of halftime, the Chargers looked to get things going offensively but the Spartans were the ones who were the first to find the scoreboard in the second half. The Sparts were able to corral another cross into the box and sneak one by the Chargers goalie at the 53rd minute to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

The Chargers continued to send multiple attacks towards the box but couldn't get anything going as the Spartans stifled any scoring opportunities. The Spartans managed to tack on two more goals to the total with just under 15 minutes left in full time to end the game 6-0.

By the Numbers: The Spartans edged out the Chargers in shots 14-10 while the shots on goal were 9-1 in favor of the Spartans… the Chargers won the corner kick battle 6-4… Mitzefelt had two goals for the Spartans while Safley, Howlett, and Martin all added one goal each.

Up Next: The Chargers return to Donald H. Funk Field for a matchup with Neumann on Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m.
