Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Hunter Gerber

Chargers Lose to Knights on Last Second Goal, 2-1

The Lancaster Bible College Men's Soccer team returned to the lights of Donald H. Funk Field on Wednesday night for another bout with a non-conference foe, this time being the Neumann Knights. The Chargers fought hard, playing down a man for the majority of the game, but lost on a game-winning goal in the 89th minute, losing 2-1. The Chargers fall to 2-4-1 overall while the Knights improve to 2-4 on the year.

How It Happened: The first half started relatively slow as both teams battled for possession. Several runs were made from both sides, but none were successful. It wasn't until a Charger defender pulled down a Knights attacker in the goalkeeper's box, resulting in a penalty shot for the Knights. Looking as if it was going to be the first score of the game, Chargers sophomore goalie Richie Lockard said otherwise, making a phenomenal save that sent the teammates and the crowd into a frenzy.

Although playing down a man, the Chargers found a new spark and began to increase the intensity of their attacks, getting several potential looks at goal. The Chargers found their breakthrough with just under ten minutes left in the first half. Junior Devyn Kintzer placed a cross into the middle of the box, finding teammate Ben Nolt for the score and giving the Chargers a 1-0 advantage headed into the half.

The second half started off just as the first half did, with both teams looking to maintain possession while looking for a break in the defense. It wasn't until under fifteen minutes of play that the Knights final got one to go through as Neumann's DiFilippo put a rebound off a free kick into the goal, tying the game at 1-1.

Both teams continued to vie for possession for what seemed to be the remainder of the second half. As the game was headed to a 1-1 draw, a last minute offensive push from the Knights found the foot of a Knights attacker who scored with just fifty seconds remaining, giving the Knights a 2-1 advantage with just a minute left in full time. A stunner for the Chargers.

By the Numbers: The Knights outshot the Chargers 16-5 with 10 of those being on goal… the Chargers racked up eight total saves… the Knights garnered nine corner kicks to the Chargers' one… Nolt had the lone goal… Kintzer added an assist… DiFilippo had a goal and an assist… Siemien had the game-winning goal.

Information to Know: Nolt is the Chargers' second leading goal scorer with five goals behind Andrew Cox who has six goals on the season… this was only the Chargers' second contest with the Knights in program history, with the Chargers losing both.

Up Next: The Chargers open United East Conference play this Saturday, September 23 at Penn St. Abington at 1:00 p.m.
