Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ben James

Men's Soccer Come Up Short in First Conference Game

Lancaster Bible's men's soccer team lost their first conference game of the 2023 season to Penn State Abington 3-2. After the loss, the Chargers drop to 2-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the United East. Meanwhile, the Lions improve to 3-3-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

How It Happened: Things started off slow for the Chargers as the Lions came out roaring, nearly immediately following a goal in the bottom right corner by Arsene Bado. Abington got another shot that was just off-target following their first goal, and the Chargers were unable to get a whole lot of pressure early in the match. However, in the 21st minute, Devyn Kintzer had his shot hit the post, and the Chargers could not tie it up. Bado had another shot on goal for Abington that was saved by Chargers' goalkeeper Richie Lockard, but another Lion followed with a second goal. Later in the first half, the Chargers continued to get a few shots on goal, but unfortunately, none of them could find the back of the net as the team entered halftime down 2-0.

In the second half, the Chargers again failed to gain their footing as Penn St. Abington capitalized on another early goal in the 47th minute, going up 3-0. Penn St. Abington answered with two shots on goal and four corner kicks in the next five minutes, but Lockard came out with two saves for the Chargers. In the 61st minute, Lancaster Bible capitalized on their possessions as Owen Nell was able to score the first goal for the team. Again, in the 67th minute, the Chargers got their second goal in a span of under seven minutes after Andrew Cox scored off an assist from Dan Marcroft. Unfortunately, after another 23 minutes of play, the Chargers couldn't complete the comeback and lost to Penn St. Abington 3-2.

By the Numbers:
- Owen Nell and Andrew Cox both had a goal for the Chargers
- Marcos Nuñes and Dan Marcoft assisted on the two goals, respectively
- Richie Lockard ended with six saves
- Eljo Agolli led Penn State Abington with two goals

Information to Know: These two teams have a rich history, and the Chargers now fall to 5-7-3 all-time against the Lions. This game was tied for the highest score between the two teams with a total of five goals scored. Andrew Cox remains the team's leading goal-scorer with seven on the year. This was freshman Dan Marcroft's first collegiate assist.

Up Next: The Chargers will head back home to face off against Cairn University on Wednesday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m.
