Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Chase Gerber

Chargers Secure First Conference Win

The Lancaster Bible College Women's soccer team hosted conference foe Cairn Highlanders on Wednesday night as they continued United East play. After their loss on homecoming, the Chargers were looking for a solid bounce back game and they found just that. The Chargers secured their first conference win, 2-1, on the back of an impressive first half. The Chargers improve to 2-3-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play while the Highlanders drop to 1-6-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

How It Happened: The first half started slow with a couple of offensive attacks from both teams but nothing to come of them. The Chargers tried to find their groove early in a fast paced and physical game taking advantage of the pace to show some offensive potential. The Chargers first scored in the 24th minute off a corner kick taken by Leah Perreault that connected with a Brooke Graham header. This was the first goal of Graham's career. The next goal came just seven minutes later as freshman Allie Zuber struck from deep to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. The half ended with a comfortable lead for the Chargers.

With the Chargers up 2-0, they started the second half with the hopes to extend the lead. The Highlanders minimized the Chargers offensive opportunities for most of the half but were unable to score themselves as the Chargers anchored down on the defensive end for most of the half. It wasn't until the last couple minutes where the Highlanders scored on a free kick to put themselves on the board. The Highlanders chances at a rally fell short as the Chargers earned themselves a 2-1 win in front of the home crowd.

From the Coach: "We are happy to get our first conference win of the season," said Head Coach Jake Warren"I didn't think we played our best, but scored a couple great goals! The girls deserved the result after an unlucky stretch of games."

By the Numbers: The Chargers led in shots 17-9... the Chargers had 11 corners to the Highlanders 4... Highlanders ended with 7 saves to the Chargers 5... Graham and Zuber both had a goal of their own... Perreault notched an assist.

Up Next: The Chargers head out of state to Maryland to face St. Mary's (Md.) in a conference match on Saturday, October 5th at 2:00 p.m.
