Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Survive and Advance! Marcroft’s Overtime Goal Lifts Chargers to Quarterfinals

The Lancaster Bible College Men's Soccer team traveled to the seven-seeded Rosemont Ravens on Wednesday night for the first round of the United East Conference Playoffs. The Chargers were able to send the game to overtime behind Eufemia's goal in the 78th minute, but it was Marcroft that put the finishing touches in double-overtime at the 107th minute to win 3-2. The Chargers improve to 5-9-3 overall while the Ravens finish their season 7-8-3 overall.

How It Happened: It was a quick start for the Chargers as junior Ben Nolt notched the first goal of the game in just the fourth minute on an assist from Marcroft to take an early 1-0 lead. The Ravens, however, were ready to defend their home turf, tying the game at 1-1 just over 21 minutes later. Keeping the offensive pressure alive, the Ravens were able to draw a penalty in the box that led to a penalty kick. Chargers goalkeeper Chris Jackson was able to come up with a huge save on the penalty kick, but the Ravens followed the rebound to score and take a 2-1 lead just over halfway through the first half. The Chargers found themselves facing elimination as they went to halftime down 2-1.

The Chargers continued to press offensively in the second half, but unfortunately were unable to catch any breaks. That was until the 78th minute where Matthew Eufemia sent the equalizer into the net on an assist from Kyle Durkin. Both teams traded efforts, but the game headed to overtime.

With the pressure continuing to increase every minute, the Ravens placed three shots on goal, but freshman goalkeeper Luke Macchione came up with two crucial saves. Entering the second overtime and time winding down, it was a simple pass ahead and to the middle that gave Marcroft just enough time for a touch and shot at the top of the eighteen which Marcroft put just outside the goalkeeper's reach to score the game-winner. Joel Walker and Andrew Cox were awarded the assists on the game-winning goal. The Chargers won in the 107th minute to advance to the United East Quarterfinals.

From the Coach: "Today was about confidence and resilience for our team," said Head Coach Tom Ardt. "I'm super proud of each guy and it was awesome to be a part of the energy and intesity of playoff soccer. Rosemone was very good and it was a great game all around. We are looking forward to the next opportunity on Saturday."

By the Numbers: The Chargers were outshot 26-14… the Chargers tallied 12 saves on the day… both the Chargers and the Ravens had three corner kicks… Nolt, Eufemia, and Marcroft had a goal.

Up Next: The Chargers will travel to the two-seed Penn St. Abington this Saturday, November 2 for the United East Quarterfinal. Game time to be determined.
