Chargers, Coach Brown Grabs First Win of the Season

The Lancaster Bible College Chargers Women's Basketball team under first year Head Coach Arkel Brown earned their first win of the season over Lehman on Friday night, 66-53.  The win also marks Head Coach Arkel Brown's first NCAA Division III win in his coaching career. The Chargers found double figures from four different scorers tonight to improve to 1-1 overall while the Lightning drop to 1-2 overall.

How It Happened: The Chargers found themselves with a 33-28 lead at halftime. Sophomore Natalie Wenger got it started with back-to-back layups, four of her team high 14 points for their night. Keilani Araniva also got two short jumpers to go leading to an 8-6 lead through five minutes of play in the first period. The Chargers managed to keep the lead through the first period, but the Lightning started the second period tying the game at 16-16. Katie Lewis responded with a three to take the lead once again 19-16, three of Lewis' eight second quarter points. A steal and layup from Serene Calderon at the end of the half led to a 33-28 halftime score in favor of the Chargers.

The Chargers lead grew to as much as 15-points in the third period as Wenger and Rachel Nolt scored back-to-back jumpers to push the score to 43-28. The Lightning battled back to work themselves within four points but a huge fourth quarter from the Chargers including six points from Calderon helped secure a 66-53 win.

By the Numbers: The Chargers shot 41-percent (25-61) from the field, 23-percent (3-13) from three, and 72-percent (13-18) from the line… the Lightning shot 33-percent (23-68) from the field, 20-percent (1-5) from three, and 40-percent (6-15) from the line… the Chargers had 20 points off turnovers and 16 second chance points… Wenger had a game high 14 points on 5-10 shooting… Lewis, Calderon, and Araniva all had 10 points each… Araniva had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds… Heaven Figueroa had a game high 36 points.

Up Next: The Chargers return to Goucher College for a contest with Trinity Washington on Saturday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Renee Amos Tipoff Tournament.
