Women’s Basketball Squandered by Sea Gulls

The Lancaster Bible College Women's Basketball team squared off against the last non-conference opponent of the 2023-24 season, the Salisbury Sea Gulls, on Saturday February 10. After coming out of halftime tied 37-37, the Sea Gulls used a second half scoring spurt to win the game 81-62. The Chargers fall to 8-15 overall and stay 6-5 in conference currently fourth overall headed into postseason play late next week. The Sea Gulls improve to 7-16 overall, breaking a nine-game losing streak.

How It Happened: Back-to-back layups from sophomore Raven Hunter and freshman Rachel Nolt put the Chargers ahead 4-0 early. The Sea Gulls then hit a three to bring it back to within one point, the story for much of the first half. Two good free throws from senior Alaysha Iwais pushed the Charger lead to seven with 2:25 left in the first quarter, but the Sea Gulls battled back to take the lead with 30 seconds to go.

The Sea Gulls controlled the lead for much of the second quarter, maintaining a four-point lead until freshman Natalie Wenger converted an and-one and a jumper to complete a five-point swing and reclaim the lead. The competitive first half ended with both teams tied at 37-37.

The lead changed a few times before the Sea Gulls put together a string of baskets leading to as big of a lead as ten points. Wenger converted another layup at the buzzer to bring the Chargers' deficit to eight points. The Sea Gulls continued their scoring barrage into the fourth quarter with the lead growing to as much as 19 points, finishing the game with a final score of 81-62.

By the Numbers: The Chargers finished going 36-percent from the floor, 15-percent from beyond the arc, and 55-percent from the free throw line… the Sea Gulls were 47-percent from the field, 25-percent from three, and 73-percent from the free throw line… four players scored in double figures: Wenger (15), Iwais (12), Nolt (11),and Hunter (11)… Wenger's 15 points and seven rebounds were a career high… Salisbury was led by Hailey Ader with 17 points and Sym Deloatch with 16 points.
