Softball Edged Out by Harrisburg in Doubleheader

Lancaster Bible College Softball team headed to United East rival Penn St. Harrisburg for a doubleheader and fell short in game one 10-9 in 10 innings, along with game two 15-5 in five innings. The Chargers are now 8-15 overall with a conference record of 2-6. The Nittany Lions jumped to 16-8 this season and are 6-4 in the United East.

Game 1, L 10-9

How It Happened: The first inning started with a bang for the Chargers' bats, and Phoebe Clemens hit a single down center field to bring two runners home. KariAnn Mecke immediately followed with a double to bring in Clemens and take a 3-0 lead at the top of the inning. However, Penn St. Harrisburg quickly responded, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Sheyenne King hit a massive triple in the second inning resulting in one more run for Lancaster Bible. Clemens got another RBI, bringing King home to take a 5-2 lead, but the Nittany Lions had a big inning and took the lead 7-5.

After Harrisburg added another run in the third, Mecke responded with her second RBI of the day to make it a 6-8 game in favor of Harrisburg. Riley Danko pitched an outstanding fourth inning allowing just one hit but held the Nittany Lions scoreless. After both sides failed to score in the fifth inning, the Chargers capitalized with two runs to tie it at eight. Danko held Harrisburg hitless at the bottom of the sixth, leaving it at a tie game going into the seventh inning. However, with both sides going hitless again, it was on to extra innings. After Noelle Martin stole third, Clemens stepped up big with a triple to bring Martin home and take a one-run lead. Harrisburg tied it up at nine, but a big throw from Alyssa Hamilton had a Nittany Lion runner out at home to keep it a tie. The Chargers failed to score in the ninth and tenth innings, and after a long, hard-fought game, Harrisburg finished it off with a walk-off run, beating Lancaster Bible 10-9 in 10 innings.

Game 2, L 15-5

How It Happened: The Chargers know how to tally runs in the first inning, and KariAnn Mecke did so with a double to bring Sheyenne King home and go up one. However, behind a huge first inning of their own, Penn St. Harrisburg took a big jump ahead to lead 6-1 going into the third inning. To crawl out of the hole, Phoebe Clemens hit a sacrifice fly to bring in one run in the third inning. Yet again, the Nittany Lions answered with three runs and led 9-2 after three innings. With two runners on base, Noelle Martin singled, resulting in two more runs for Lancaster Bible, down 9-4. Harrisburg responded with another big inning posting six runs to lead 15-4 at the end of the fourth.
