Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mark Rowles

Chargers Stifled on the Road by Brandywine

The Lancaster Bible College Women's Basketball team played their second straight road game with just five players available on Tuesday evening, suffering a tough 52-49 loss to Penn St. Brandywine. The Chargers fall to 9-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play, while the Lions improve to 2-17 overall and earn their first-ever United East win at 1-10.

How it Happened:
The Chargers scored first on a layup by sophomore Isabella Eufemia two minutes into the game, but Brandywine went on a 9-0 run to grab their first lead of the game at 9-6. Freshman Natane White hit a free throw to tie the game at 11, then the Chargers closed the first quarter with nine straight points capped off by a Eufemia layup, giving LBC a six-point lead after 10 minutes. The run continued into the second quarter with another seven points to cap the run at 16-0 for the Chargers, with Eufemia adding two scores and White knocking down a three. Sophomore Rachel Nolt scored at the end of the quarter to help LBC head to halftime up 14 points at 33-19.

Brandywine turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, limiting the Chargers to just five points in the third quarter while forcing seven LBC turnovers. The Lions continued to threaten entering the fourth quarter as the Chargers' lead was cut to just four points at 38-34 with 10 minutes to play. Within two minutes of the final period, the Lions took back the lead by three, but a pair of free throws from senior Serene Calderon brought it back to a 41-41 tie with 6:15 remaining. The Lions worked up their largest lead of the game at six points, then a 3-pointer from White and a layup by Calderon cut it back to one. After a close foul call with 1:12 to play, Calderon fouled out of the game and the Chargers were left with four players, but that didn't stop White from knocking down her fourth 3-pointer of the night to put the Chargers on top 49-48. With 22-seconds left, Watson hit a big jumper for Brandywine, forcing the Chargers to foul and allowing Brandywine to escape with a three-point win and their first conference win of the season.

By the Numbers:
- The Chargers shot 35-percent from the floor, 21-percent from 3-point range, and 78-percent from the free throw line
- The Lions shot 32-percent from the floor, 13-percent from three, and 40-percent on free throws
- Natane White led the Chargers with 13 points and a career-high four made threes
- Serene Calderon added 12 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double
- Rachel Nolt grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and added nine points as well
- The Lions were led by Trinell Watson with 18 points, including the go-ahead jumper in the final minute

Information to Know:
The Chargers are now 2-6 all-time against Brandywine and split the season series 1-1 in United East play.
