The Lancaster Bible College Men's Volleyball team hosted local foe Elizabethtown on Wednesday night, pulling out the five-set victory 3-2 in front of the home crowd. The Chargers improve to 6-2 overall while the Blue Jays fall to 4-3 overall.
How it Happened:
Senior
Dawson Forney landed the first kill for LBC, then the Chargers later built a five-point lead at 12-7 after a free-ball kill from junior
Zach Herb. The Chargers led by as many as nine in the set, but the Blue Jays rallied late in the set to come within just one point. The Chargers, however, secured the final point for a 25-23 opening set win.
The Chargers took control early in set two, powering to a 9-1 lead behind two service aces from junior
Jake Rotelle and back-to-back blocks from sophomores
Jaiden Flanagan and
Jordan Yoder. Lancaster Bible continued to create separation with a solo block by junior
Nicholas Marion, finding their largest lead in the set at 16-7. The Blue Jays once again rallied late, but a pair of errors by Elizabethtown wrapped up set two 25-19 to put the Chargers up 2-0 in the match.
Elizabethtown took an early lead in set three 5-2, but the Chargers came back to tie it at five after kills from Flanagan and Yoder. Soon after, LBC scored four straight points, accented by a block from Forney and sophomore
Kevin Bryant. The Blue Jays showed lots of life late, launching a seven-point run to take control and win the set 25-20 to force another set. In the fourth set, the Chargers went up 7-5 on a Forney service ace, but Elizabethtown went on another big run with five straight to pull ahead 10-7. The Blue Jays controlled down the stretch, stealing another set from LBC 25-20 and forcing a deciding fifth set in the Horst Athletic Center.
There were three early tied scores in set five before the Blue Jays scored four in a row including two blocks to go up 6-3. After the switch at 8-5, Lancaster Bible fought back to tie the set at 8-8 after a big block from Herb. Elizabethtown took back a two-point lead twice late in the set, but a pair of errors helped LBC bring it to a 13-13 tie. Facing match point, another set of errors propelled the Chargers to their own match point at 15-14, but an E-Town kill tied it back up. After another trade in points, back-to-back attack errors out of bounds lit up the gym and earned the Chargers an 18-16 set win and a 3-2 match victory.
