The Lancaster Bible College Women's Soccer team traveled to Reading, Pa. on Tuesday evening for a United East matchup with Penn St. Berks, earning a 2-1 road victory after a goal in the final minute put LBC on top, LBC's first win against Berks in 13 years. The Chargers improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference while the Lions drop to 4-6-2 overall and 2-1 in conference.
How it Happened:
The Chargers fended off a few early shots from Berks before graduate student
Jade Weir put a shot on goal that was saved. A few minutes later, the Chargers had two more shots that were saved by the Lions' keeper, one by senior
Janae Bergey and one by junior
Isabella Eufemia. Berks drew the first corner kick of the game halfway through the first half, but could not score, then the Chargers had five of the next six shots in the game with two more on goal. It was the 37th minute when LBC got their first corner of the game, with Bergey taking a shot off-target. Approaching the five-minute mark of the first half, the Lions drew a corner and crossed it into the box and buried a score to take the lead 1-0 in the 40th minute, taking that lead into the break.
The Chargers drew a corner three minutes into the half and put four shots on goal to attack early in the first five minutes, but could not break through. After a Lions shot wide, the Chargers quickly flipped the field as sophomore
Zoe Beers got free in the middle of the field, feeding the ball up to Bergey who sunk a shot across to the left side for a goal, tying the game at 1-1 in the 60th minute. Neither team took their foot off the gas, forcing shots left and right and drawing three total corners for the rest of the game. In the final minute of the game, the Chargers pushed up the field for a few throw ins, then Beers had the ball on the left side and once again found Bergey, who created space across the middle and fired a shot to the left that landed in for a goal, giving the Chargers the lead with 24-seconds remaining that led them to a 2-1 victory on the road in conference play.
